Mining companies operating in Africa are increasing their investment in new security technologies, and are procuring services that help them to refine security strategies and security implementation, diversified mining and exploration company Emiral Resource founder Boris Ivanov tells Mining Weekly. “This will enable companies to foresee threats and react more quickly and accurately,” he says.

As environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) reporting improves, so does the implementation of the resulting policies across the African mining industry,  consulting engineer and scientist firm SRK Consulting director and principal consultant Andrew van Zyl tells Mining Weekly. He says that, although most mining companies operating in Africa – especially the larger companies – have had ESG on their agendas for some time, there is now more progress with regard to embedding ESG policies into their operations.

There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution to combat the rise of illegal mining and the associated artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) industry in Africa, says diversified mining and exploration company Emiral Resource founder Boris Ivanov. ASM is a legal industry in many African countries, with various government policies supporting it; however, in some countries, it is still classified as illegal.

Many mines in Africa have underestimated their social impact and often struggle to manage this constructively, consulting engineer and scientist firm SRK Consulting partner and principal scientist Wouter Jordaan tells Mining Weekly. He says an added complication is the shift in corporate culture that can occur during mergers or acquisitions – a frequent occurrence in the mining industry.

With demand for explosives improving, mining explosives technology company BME, part of JSE-listed Omnia Group, has been successfully maintaining supply to customers across Africa. BME GM Ralf Hennecke notes that this was despite the disruptions and cross-border challenges the company faced. He adds that the company is already experiencing a significant uptick in demand for their blasting solutions for mines across a range of commodities in African markets, including iron-ore, gold, copper, platinum and manganese.
