Global warming may limit spread of dengue fever, new research finds

Eurekalert.org

(Penn State) Infection with dengue virus makes mosquitoes more sensitive to warmer temperatures, according to new research led by Penn State researchers. The team also found that infection with the bacterium Wolbachia, which has recently been used to control viral infections in mosquitoes, also increases the thermal sensitivity of the insects. The findings suggest that global warming could limit the spread of dengue fever but could also limit the effectiveness of Wolbachia as a biological control agent.

OU researcher applies principles of fluid dynamics to weather research

Eurekalert.org

(University of Oklahoma) A University of Oklahoma researcher, Scott Salesky, leads a project funded by a half-a-million-dollar grant from the Department of Energy to improve climate modeling. This research project is one of several funded through a $15.6 million initiative by the DOE for new research that aims to improve scientists' ability to accurately predict weather and climate patterns.

Collaborative digitalization of supply chain ecosystem is overdue for some industries

Eurekalert.org

(World Scientific) Through the last few decades, technologies have improved processes within the four walls of a business, e-commerce has evolved significantly, and other supply chain systems are moving products to the market more efficiently than ever. The evolution hasn't stopped there. Today, supply chain digitalization is ushering in a whole new business model, one where real-time connectivity and responsiveness, greater visibility, and anticipation will become the underlying characteristics of our businesses. $1M NASA grant to improve carbon monitoring in East Africa

Eurekalert.org

(Cornell University) Cornell University researchers will develop the first high-resolution carbon monitoring system for East Africa that combines "bottom up" ecological modeling with "top down" satellite data, thanks to a three-year, $1 million NASA grant.

Trash-bin foragers: Innovation and spread of complex culture in suburban parrots

Eurekalert.org

In the suburbs of Sydney, Australia, sulphur-crested cockatoos routinely loot lidded household waste bins to scavenge for food. In a new study, researchers document the emergence and geographic spread of innovative bin-opening behaviors in urban parrot populations, revealing the presence of a complex social learning culture in these birds.

A case for intranasal COVID-19 vaccinations

Eurekalert.org

Of the nearly 100 SARS-CoV-2 vaccines currently undergoing clinical trials, only seven are delivered intranasally - despite this vaccine type's long success in providing protection from influenza.

Spontaneous retinal waves simulate optical flow before neonatal mice can see

Eurekalert.org

Like dreaming of walking through a world they've not yet experienced, the retinas of neonatal mice practice for what mature eyes must later process by generating spontaneous patterns of activity that mimic the perception of directional movement through space, according to a new study.

Mars: Scientists determine crustal thickness

Eurekalert.org

Using recordings of marsquakes, seismologists have gained a precise picture of the structure and thickness of the red planet's crust / findings from NASA's InSight mission published in 'Science'

Untwisting DNA reveals new force that shapes genomes

Eurekalert.org

Advances in microscopy reveal how the human genome organises itself in three-dimensional space at much higher resolution than previously possible. A new study finds that transcription generates a force that moves across DNA strands like ripples through water. The discovery may have future implications for the understanding of genetic diseases such as Cornelia de Lange syndrome, developmental disorders linked to chromatin folding, and open new avenues of research in genome fragility and cancer development.

Astronomers make first clear detection of a moon-forming disc around an exoplanet

Eurekalert.org

Using the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner, astronomers have unambiguously detected the presence of a disc around a planet outside our Solar System for the first time. The observations will shed new light on how moons and planets form in young stellar systems.

RNA breakthrough creates crops that can grow 50% more potatoes, rice

Eurekalert.org

A new RNA breakthrough is allowing plants to yield dramatically more crops and increase drought tolerance, which could have an impact on food scarcity and production as climate change threatens ecosystems. In initial tests, adding a gene encoding for a protein called FTO to both rice and potato plants increased their yield by 50% in field tests - and the plants grew significantly larger, produced longer root systems and were better able to tolerate drought stress.

Spotted: An exoplanet with the potential to form moons

Eurekalert.org

New high-resolution observations clearly show a moon-forming region around exoplanet PDS 70c. The observations have allowed astronomers to determine the ring-shaped region's size and mass for the first time.

Prostate cancer treatment among black, white patients during pandemic

Eurekalert.org

What The Study Did: This study included 647 patients with untreated nonmetastatic prostate cancer (269 patients during the pandemic and 378 from before the pandemic). During the initial COVID-19 lockdown, only 1% of Black men underwent prostatectomy, while 26% of white patients did.

Drought changes rice root microbiome

Eurekalert.org

Drought can have a lasting impact on the community of microbes that live in and around roots of rice plants. The results show how plants may more quickly adapt to repeated intermittent drought.

Land repair vital for survival

Eurekalert.org

Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live there, experts warn in a major new paper in Nature Ecology & Evolution. Scientists leading the Global Arid Zone Project examined restoration seeding outcomes at 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species - with the lessons learned important to meeting ambitious future restoration targets.

Meet the Martian meteorite hunters

Eurekalert.org

A team at the Natural History Museum (NHM), London is paving the way for future rovers to search for meteorites on Mars. The scientists are using the NHM's extensive meteorite collection to test the spectral instruments destined for the ExoMars rover Rosalind Franklin, and develop tools to identify meteorites on the surface of the red planet. The project is being presented today (23 July) at the virtual National Astronomy Meeting 2021.

DeepMind and EMBL release the most complete database of predicted 3D structures of human proteins

Eurekalert.org

DeepMind is partnering with EMBL to make the most complete and accurate database yet of the predicted human protein structures freely and openly available to the scientific community The AlphaFold Protein Structure Database will enable research that advances understanding of these building blocks of life, accelerating research across a variety of fields.AlphaFold's impact is already being realised by early partners researching neglected diseases, studying antibiotic resistance, and recycling single-use plastics.
