How Goalkeepers Had to Adapt to Defending Penalty Shootouts Over Penalty Strokes Over Time

English Field Hockey

Hockey has evolved over the decades and the way game is played has undergone significant changes. Hockey goalkeepers also have to adapt to the changing demands of the sport. For over close to four decades, the penalty stroke rule was in place for matches that end in a tie (penalty stroke rule was first introduced at the 1972 Munich Olympics in the 11th-place classification match when Poland defeated France). The penalty stroke rule mandated players to take the stroke from 6.4 metres away from the centre of the goal. Читать дальше...

Netherlands win, but South Africa begin showing the lessons learnt

English Field Hockey

South Africa and Netherlands faced off for the second time in Potchefstroom for the FIH Pro League on Saturday Night. South Africa had been heavily defeated in the opening meeting between the two sides earlier in the week and were desperate to give a better account of themselves this time round.

France Exact Sweet Revenge over India

English Field Hockey

France are considered one of the rapidly-improving sides in the world – many might have thought that perhaps they are an over-hyped side given their listless 0-5 defeat to India in the first encounter. Les Blues showed against the Netherlands in their next game why they are talked about so highly as they held the Dutch 2-2 in regulation time before going down in the penalty shootout.

France stun Olympic bronze medallists India 5-2

India's lacklustre performance can be summed up from the fact that they earned as many as 10 penalty corners but failed to find the back of the net.

India suffer the blues as France find form; Netherlands hit South Africa for six and Belgium men, women feel Argentina bite

English Field Hockey

It was an exciting day of Pro League action as the No. 13 world ranked France toppled the No. 3-ranked Indian side in an exciting 5-2 game in South Africa. While the France defence were outstanding, it was the firing offence that put on a show. India struggled to convert on penalty corners and could only tally from the stroke mark. In the game following, Dennis Warmerdam buried two fantastic goals to lead the Netherlands to a 6-2 victory and pick up Player of the Game honours. The Dutch were in fine form all game... Imagine a great river, flowing free

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

Some environmental groups and water honchos have sponsored a “Rewilding of Glen Canyon” contest, with the winner getting $4,000 “and counting.” The contest’s goal is to reconnect the Colorado River above and below a dismantled dam, to restore the beauty of a glorious place now submerged by Lake Powell — just 26% full.

US must develop raw materials for electric vehicles, solar panels

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

In recent years, Americans have become far more aware of China’s massive presence in the global economy. They’ve faced shortages of imports from China during the COVID pandemic — with stores running out of common, everyday goods. And they’ve seen global protests over China’s hosting of the Winter Olympics.

Climate change is deadly serious

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

What is it going to take to convince Americans of the severity and potentially dreadful consequences of climate change so that we force our elected leaders to stop arguing and take action?

Dangerous police policy must end

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

A wretched outcome of the 1970s no-knock warrant policy was illustrated again this month with the Minneapolis police killing of an innocent man in nine seconds of SWAT entry, and the fact that the person named in the warrant was not present.

Voter ID isn’t too much to ask

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

To claim this ballot question would scale back voter accessibility in Nevada by requiring residents to show identification at the polls is only partially true. Those who have ID will have access, and those who don’t won’t. Seems pretty simple to me.

Saying goodbye in the time of COVID

Las Vegas Sun (lasvegassun.com)

There have been a lot of “goodbyes” these past two years. We said goodbye to normalcy. We said goodbye to how we worked. We said goodbye to how we gathered. We said goodbye to how we celebrate and we said “goodbye” to how we say our goodbyes.

Alex Neil questions squad in wake of Sunderland's draw at AFC Wimbledon

The Northern Echo: Sunderland

ON Friday evening, as he conducted his first interview with Sunderland’s official media channels, Alex Neil was speaking enthusiastically about his excitement at being appointed head coach. Less than 24 hours later, as he stood on the touchline at Plough Lane in the wake of a disjointed draw with AFC Wimbledon, the Scot was frankly acknowledging the scale of the task he has taken on. When it comes to the Black Cats, it does not take long for reality to bite.
