From the Gospel: Trust him with your life – Fr Stefan Attard

Times of Malta

Sixth Sunday of ordinary time: Today’s readings: Jeremiah 17,5-8; 1 Corinthians 15,12.16-20; Luke 6,17.20-26 A short clip about an Italian mountaineer was recently doing the rounds. The poor man, having slipped down the mountainside, found himself holding on to a piece of rock, while his feet dangled loosely above what seemed to be a frightening drop. He frantically called out for help: “C’è qualcuno?” (Is anyone there?). After doing so at the top of his voice a few times, a deep voice was heard... Читать дальше...

The rising costs of shipping: their causes and impact – Peter Grima

Times of Malta

In order to satisfy the exigencies of international trade, merchant vessels are inevitably forced to navigate inclement conditions as they traverse cross-continental shipping routes under time constraints. Indeed, the shipping sector is not without its harrowing incidents. The temporary blocking of the Suez Canal by the container vessel Ever Given in 2021 is one such example, where one of the world’s busiest shipping routes was choked for six long days by the grounding of the 400m vessel. The... Читать дальше...

Business success: can it be strategically planned?

Times of Malta

In addition to internal efforts, companies invest €30 billion annually in strategy consulting. By analysing core questions such as where are we now, where do we want to be and how do we get there, plans are drawn up to make long-term corporate goals achievable, despite uncertain conditions. In doing so, strategists try to consider all factors from the outset. However, numerous studies show that 50 to 90 per cent of all strategic initiatives fail or will not be implemented. As early as the late 1970s... Читать дальше...

Preparing for lift off – David Curmi

Times of Malta

February has so far proved to be a major turning point in the European interest rate cycle. Much of the world has been on notice that interest rates are now heading upwards as inflation rates spike and economic activity remains relatively robust.  Until now, however, Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, has always indicated that any movements will be measured and certainly not in 2022. This is no longer the case with the markets now indicating a relatively strong chance... Читать дальше...

The Prime Minister's half-baked sop for journalists – Fr Joe Borg

Times of Malta

It had to be the goading of Nationalist MP Therese Comodini Cachia during the parliamentary debate on the opposition’s bill to raise the standard of the rule of law that finally pushed our prime minister to publish the draft legislation he asked his committee of experts to advise him about. Comodini Cachia in a tweet justifiably described Abela’s drafts as “mediocre proposals” which are not enough “to provide journalists with an enabling environment and to entrench press freedom in Malta’s constitution”. What are your rights and responsibilities when it comes to delivery of orders?

Times of Malta

Certain purchases consumers make require delivery. These purchases usually concern goods that are too bulky for consumers to carry, as well as products bought through a distance means of communication, such as online or via telephone. Usually, these products come into the consumers’ possession after the latter affect part or full payment. Thus, should consumers encounter any problems with the goods ordered, they may feel quite vulnerable. The most common problems consumers face often concern delayed, non-delivery, or non-conforming goods. Читать дальше...

Supply chains in 2022: navigating the waters – Orlanda Grech

Times of Malta

What washed ashore as remnants of the COVID-19 pandemic – lockdowns and other health restrictions; shortages of workers, freight drivers, and containers; an increase in the demand for certain goods and higher online sales – have now resurfaced and transformed into a new reality…a supply chain chaos. The sources and impacts of the current supply chain disruptions on the local market were discussed during an online event on January 19, ‘Supply Chain Crisis: Managing the Reality’, organised by the... Rise in UK house prices set to slow considerably

Times of Malta

UK house price inflation remained steady in January, with prices reaching a record high, survey data from Halifax showed last Monday. However, the lender warned that growth is likely to slow “considerably” this year as household finances come under increasing pressure. The house price index rose by 9.7 per cent year-on-year last month, the same as in December. Compared to the previous month, house prices rose by 0.3 per cent, which was the smallest monthly increase since June, indicating that... Читать дальше...
