NASA challenges students to discover what powers them

Energy-daily.com

Cleveland OH (SPX) Feb 16, 2022 - NASA is inviting students to participate in an essay contest to explore how it powers some of its most famous missions. The contest also encourages participants to learn something about themselves in the process. The Power to Explore Challenge, open to K-12 students in U.S. public, private, and homeschools, is accepting entries from Tuesday, Feb. 15 through Wednesday, April 13.

The competition asks students to learn about Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), a... Читать дальше...

Can the Salton Sea geothermal field prevent the coming lithium shortage?

Energy-daily.com

Riverside CA (SPX) Feb 17, 2022 - University of California, Riverside scientists will join a first-of-its-kind effort to map out California's so-called "Lithium Valley," and learn whether it can meet America's urgent demand for lithium in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way.

Lithium is required for making electric vehicle batteries and other devices that store and use electricity. As the world transitions away from fossil fuels and electric vehicles become more popular, an acute deficit looms in lithium supply... Читать дальше...

Quantifying California's lithium valley: can it power our EV revolution?

Energy-daily.com

Berkeley CA (SPX) Feb 17, 2022 - The Salton Sea geothermal field in California potentially holds enough lithium to meet all of America's domestic battery needs, with even enough left over to export some of it. But how much of that lithium can be extracted in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way? And how long will the resource last? These are just a few of the questions that researchers hope to answer in a new project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

There are currently... Читать дальше...

"Impossible" breakthrough brings fusion energy device closer to realization

Energy-daily.com

Princeton NJ (SPX) Feb 17, 2022 - Scientists have achieved a remarkable breakthrough in the conceptual design of twisty stellarators, experimental magnetic facilities that could reproduce on Earth the fusion energy that powers the sun and stars. The breakthrough shows how to more precisely shape the enclosing magnetic fields in stellarators to create an unprecedented ability to hold the fusion fuel together.

"The key thing was developing a piece of software that allows you to rapidly try out new design methods" said Elizabeth Paul... Читать дальше...

Brazil's Bolsonaro turns to Telegram as vote nears

France24.com (en)

Similar to the 2018 election that brought Bolsonaro to power, this October's edition is shaping up as an all-out war on social media, with disinformation as a powerful weapon. Bolsonaro, who has had various posts blocked on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for violating their rules on misinformation, is eagerly encouraging his base to follow him on Telegram as the vote nears. Founded by Russian-born tech entrepreneur Pavel Durov in 2013, Telegram is a crypted messaging app with virtually no restrictions on what users can say in messages. Читать дальше...

Astronomers discover a new type of star covered in helium burning ashes

Spacedaily.com

Tubingen, Germany (SPX) Feb 15, 2022 - A team of German astronomers, led by Professor Klaus Werner of the University of Tubingen, have discovered a strange new type of star covered in the by-product of helium burning. It is possible that the stars might have been formed by a rare stellar merger event. The fascinating results are published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

While normal stars have surfaces composed of hydrogen and helium, the stars discovered by Werner and... Читать дальше...

Gaia reveals a new member of the Milky Way family

Spacedaily.com

Paris (ESA) Feb 18, 2022 - Our galaxy, the Milky Way, began forming around 12 billion years ago. Since then, it has been growing in both mass and size through a sequence of mergers with other galaxies. Perhaps most exciting is that this process has not quite finished, and by using data from ESA's Gaia spacecraft, astronomers can see it taking place. This in turn allows to reconstruct the history of our galaxy, revealing the 'family tree' of smaller galaxies that has helped make the Milky Way what it is today. Читать дальше...

NASA's MinXSS instrument CubeSat launches to study sun's flares

Spacedaily.com

Greenbelt MD (SPX) Feb 16, 2022 - The Miniature X-Ray Solar Spectrometer 3, or MinXSS-3, successfully launched on the InspireSat-1 small satellite at 7:29 p.m. EST on Feb. 13, 2022. Also known as the Dual Aperture X-ray Solar Spectrometer, or DAXSS, it is the third of three NASA-funded MinXSS CubeSats. It will spend up to a year in low-Earth orbit studying X-rays coming from flares on the Sun.

The Sun sometimes releases flares, which are energetic bursts of light and particles triggered by the... Читать дальше...

Self-healing materials for robotics made from 'jelly' and salt

Spacedaily.com

Cambridge UK (SPX) Feb 21, 2022 - Researchers have developed self-healing, biodegradable, 3D-printed materials that could be used in the development of realistic artificial hands and other soft robotics applications.

The low-cost jelly-like materials, developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, can sense strain, temperature and humidity. And unlike earlier self-healing robots, they can also partially repair themselves at room temperature.

AI enables strategic hydropower planning across Amazon basin

Spacedaily.com

Ithaca NY (SPX) Feb 18, 2022 - An international team of researchers has for the first time demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be harnessed for sustainable hydropower development across the entire Amazon basin - stretching across South America.

The work shows how computational advances using AI can identify dams that are likely to be particularly detrimental and reveals lost environmental benefits from the 158 existing hydropower dams in the basin, originally placed without coordinated... Читать дальше...

UAE invests in drones, robots as unmanned warfare takes off

Spacedaily.com

Abu Dhabi (AFP) Feb 22, 2022 - The United Arab Emirates is ploughing money into drones, robots and other unmanned weaponry as autonomous warfare becomes more and more widespread -- including in attacks on the Gulf country by Yemeni rebels.

Large, black drones with the orange logo of EDGE, the UAE's arms consortium, were on display at this week's Unmanned Systems Exhibition (UMEX), along with remote-controlled machineguns and other "smart" weapons.
