Assassin snails (Anentome helena) as a biological model for exploring the effects of individual specialisation within generalist predators

Plos.org

by Boris W. Berkhout, Andrew Morozov

Quantifying feeding behaviour of generalist predators at the population and individual levels is crucial for understanding the structure and functioning of food webs. Individual predator/consumer feeding niches can be significantly narrower than that of the population across animal taxa. In such species, the population of a generalist predator becomes essentially an ensemble of specialist individuals and this often highly affects the dynamics of the prey-predator interactions. Survey of awareness, attitudes, and compliance with COVID-19 measures among Vermont residents

Plos.org

by Christine Vatovec, John Hanley

The objective of this research was to examine residents’ awareness, attitudes, and compliance with COVID-19 public health guidelines in Vermont, which emerged as an early leader in national pandemic response. Our methods included conducting an online survey of adult Vermont residents between January and April 2021. We analyzed demographics associated with awareness and compliance, and identified features associated with non-compliance. Our results show that... Читать дальше...

Evaluating the predictive validity of four divergent thinking tasks for the originality of design product ideation

Plos.org

by Abbey K. Erwin, Khue Tran, Wilma Koutstaal

What factors predict the originality of domain-specific idea generation? Replicating and extending an earlier study using a Design Product Ideation task in an introductory university design course, the present research, grounded in the componential theory of creativity, assessed the relative contributions to originality of design ideation from five factors: divergent thinking, personality traits, general cognitive ability, prior creative experience, and task-specific challenge/interest. The relationship between income and assets in farms and context of sustainable development

Plos.org

by Aleksander Grzelak

The objective of this paper is to identify the relationship between farm income and assets within the European Union (EU) in the context of economic and environmental sustainable development. The scientific context is connected to economic theory (the recognition of the nature of such a relationship, as well as the determination of whether sustainable development acts as a stimulant or destimulant under these conditions). The Farm Accounting Data Network system was employed in the article. Читать дальше...

vWCluster: Vector-valued optimal transport for network based clustering using multi-omics data in breast cancer

Plos.org

by Jiening Zhu, Jung Hun Oh, Joseph O. Deasy, Allen R. Tannenbaum

In this paper, we present a network-based clustering method, called vector Wasserstein clustering (vWCluster), based on the vector-valued Wasserstein distance derived from optimal mass transport (OMT) theory. This approach allows for the natural integration of multi-layer representations of data in a given network from which one derives clusters via a hierarchical clustering approach. In this study, we applied the methodology... Читать дальше...

Vulnerability assessment of freeway network considering the probabilities and consequences from a perspective based on network cascade failure

Plos.org

by Jinqiang Xu, Hainan Huang, Yanqiu Cheng, Kuanmin Chen

Freeway networks are vulnerable to natural disasters and man-made disruptions. The closure of one or more toll stations of the network often causes a sharp decrease in freeway performance. Therefore, measuring the probability and consequences of vulnerability to identify critical parts in the network is crucial for road emergency management. Most existing techniques only measure the consequences of node closure and rarely consider the... Читать дальше...

Clinicopathological and prognostic significance of long non-coding RNA EWSAT1 in human cancers: A review and meta analysis

Plos.org

by Jian Wen, Haima Li, Dongdong Li, Xieping Dong

Background

Ewing sarcoma-associated transcript 1 (lncRNA EWSAT1) is reported to have a close relationship with the overall survival in many cancers. However, the role of its prognosis and correlations with the clinicopathological features in different cancers haven’t been explored yet. Herein, we intend to assess the prognostic value and correlations with the clinicopathological features in several cancers.

Foot posture index and body composition measures in children with and without developmental coordination disorder

Plos.org

by Timothy Tsz Ting Yam, Shirley Siu Ming Fong, William Wai Nam Tsang

Background

Foot posture which forms the distal supporting structure influences on postural stability. Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) who are more likely to be overweight or obese may present with flat foot with symptoms that affect daily activities. The aim of this study was to compare the foot posture and body composition measures between children with and without DCD. In addition, this study... Читать дальше...

Loss of zebrafish dzip1 results in inappropriate recruitment of periocular mesenchyme to the optic fissure and ocular coloboma

Plos.org

by Sri Pratima Nandamuri, Sarah Lusk, Kristen M. Kwan

Cilia are essential for the development and function of many different tissues. Although cilia machinery is crucial in the eye for photoreceptor development and function, a role for cilia in early eye development and morphogenesis is still somewhat unclear: many zebrafish cilia mutants retain cilia at early stages due to maternal deposition of cilia components. An eye phenotype has been described in the mouse Arl13 mutant, however, zebrafish arl13b is maternally deposited... Читать дальше...

Compatible interaction of Brachypodium distachyon and endophytic fungus Microdochium bolleyi

Plos.org

by Pavel Matušinsky, Božena Sedláková, Dominik Bleša

Brachypodium distachyon is a useful model organism for studying interaction of cereals with phytopathogenic fungi. The present study tested the possibility of a compatible interaction of B. distachyon with the endophytic fungus Microdochium bolleyi originated from wheat roots. There was evaluated the effect of this endophytic fungus on the intensity of the attack by pathogen Fusarium culmorum in B. distachyon and wheat, and also changes in expression of genes (in B. Testing the reliability and ecological implications of ramping rates in the measurement of Critical Thermal maximum

Plos.org

by Chi-Man Leong, Toby P. N. Tsang, Benoit Guénard

Critical Thermal maximum (CTmax) is often used to characterize the upper thermal limits of organisms and represents a key trait for evaluating the fitness of ectotherms. The lack of standardization in CTmax assays has, however, introduced methodological problems in its measurement, which can lead to questionable estimates of species’ upper thermal limits. Focusing on ants, which are model organisms for research on thermal ecology, we aim... Читать дальше...
