Effects of horizontal displacement and inter-character spacing on transposed-character effects in same-different matching

Plos.org

by Stéphanie Massol, Jonathan Grainger

In two same-different matching experiments we investigated whether transposed-character effects can be modulated by the horizontal displacement or inter-character spacing of target stimuli (strings of 6 consonants, digits, or symbols). Reference and target stimuli could be identical or differed either by transposing or substituting two characters. Transposition costs (greater difficulty in detecting a difference with transpositions compared with substitutions)... Читать дальше...

The optimization of the "UAV-vehicle" joint delivery route considering mountainous cities

Plos.org

by Wusheng Liu, Wang Li, Qing Zhou, Qian Die, Yan Yang

As a new transportation tool, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), has a broad application prospect in logistics distribution, especially for mountainous cities with complex terrain. Due to the limited delivery conditions of UAV, considering the advantages of traditional vehicle delivery, this paper proposes a joint delivery mode of UAV and vehicle, and designs three steps for the joint delivery problem of single UAV and single vehicle: first... COVID-19 and screen-based sedentary behaviour: Systematic review of digital screen time and metabolic syndrome in adolescents

Plos.org

by Sarah Musa, Rowaida Elyamani, Ismail Dergaa

Aim

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governments around the globe to implement various restriction policies, including lockdown, social distancing, and school closures. Subsequently, there has been a surge in sedentary behaviour particularly screen time (ST) together with a significant decline in physical activity that was more marked amongst children and adolescents. Excessive screen exposure in adolescents has been correlated with cardio-metabolic risk factors including obesity... Читать дальше...

Am I truly monolingual? Exploring foreign language experiences in monolinguals

Plos.org

by Sofía Castro, Zofia Wodniecka, Kalinka Timmer

Monolingualism has typically been understood as a homogeneous phenomenon. The linguistic experiences of monolinguals are usually overlooked when analysing the impact of foreign language experiences on language processing and cognitive functioning. In this study, we analyse the linguistic experiences of 962 English-speaking individuals from the United Kingdom (UK) who identified as monolinguals. Through an online survey, we found that more than... Читать дальше...

Spatiotemporal variability in Swedish lake ecosystems

Plos.org

by Tarsha Eason, Ahjond Garmestani, David G. Angeler

Studying ecosystem dynamics is critical to monitoring and managing linked systems of humans and nature. Due to the growth of tools and techniques for collecting data, information on the condition of these systems is more widely available. While there are a variety of approaches for mining and assessing data, there is a need for methods to detect latent characteristics in ecosystems linked to temporal and spatial patterns of change. Resilience-based... Читать дальше...

Comparison of six methods for Loa loa genomic DNA extraction

Plos.org

by Roland Dieki, Edouard Nsi Emvo, Jean Paul Akue

Objectives

Good-quality and sufficient DNA is essential for diagnostics and vaccine development. We aimed to compare six DNA extraction techniques applied to Loa loa microfilariae in order to evaluate the purity and integrity of extracts in terms of quality and quantity.

Methods

The microfilariae were purified via a Percoll gradient procedure with blood from hyper-microfilaremic individuals (> 30,000 microfilaria [mf]/ml). DNA... Читать дальше...

Risk factors for Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis: A meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Dashan Li, Yuanyuan Li, Hanxu Zeng, Yonggui Wu

Purpose

Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS) is the most serious complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD), which considerably reduces the patient’s quality of life, leading to patients discontinuing PD. Considering these negative effects, it is necessary to systematically review and determine the risk factors of EPS.

Methods

The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and China Biology Medicine (CBM) were searched from their inception to January 1st... Читать дальше...

An efficient algorithm calculating common solvent accessible volume

Plos.org

by In Jung Kim, Hyuntae Na

The solvent accessible surface area and the solvent accessible volume are measurements commonly used in implicit solvent models to include the effect of forces exerted by solvents on the protein surfaces (or the atoms on protein surfaces). The two measurements have limitations in describing interactions between proteins (or proteins’ atoms) mediated/bridged by solvents. This is because describing the interactions between proteins should be able to capture the chain... Читать дальше...

Droughts and child health in Bangladesh

Plos.org

by Kien Le, My Nguyen

This paper investigates the extent to which in-utero exposure to droughts influences the health outcomes of Bangladeshi children in early childhood. Exploiting the plausibly exogenous deviations of rainfall from the location-specific norms, we find that deficient rainfall during the prenatal period is harmful to child health. Specifically, in-utero exposure to droughts decreases the height-for-age, weight-for-height, and weight-for-age z-scores by 0.10, 0.11, and 0.11... Читать дальше...

Climate solution or corporate co-optation? US and Canadian publics’ views on agricultural gene editing

Plos.org

by Sara Nawaz, Terre Satterfield

The dexterity and affordability of gene-editing technologies promise wide-ranging applications in agriculture. Aiming to take advantage of this, proponents emphasize benefits such as the climate-mitigating promises of gene editing. Critics, on the other hand, argue that gene editing will perpetuate industrialized forms of agriculture and its concomitant environmental and social problems. Across a representative sample of US and Canadian residents (n = 1478)... Читать дальше...

Spatial evolution and influencing factors of religious places from a socio-spatial perspective: An empirical analysis of Christianity in China

Plos.org

by Yujuan Chen, Ning Lin, Liang Ding, Jianping Qu, Qijun Zhou

The mismatch between the supply and demand of religious places has resulted from a lack of management, population mobility, and urban socio-spatial differentiation. Furthermore, the identity of religious groups and the localized characteristics of their behavioral practices continue to dominate the evolution of religious places. Therefore, this study analyzed the spatio-temporal patterns of Christian activity places, and further... Читать дальше...

Developing random forest hybridization models for estimating the axial bearing capacity of pile

Plos.org

by Tuan Anh Pham, Van Quan Tran

Accurate determination of the axial load capacity of the pile is of utmost importance when designing the pile foundation. However, the methods of determining the axial load capacity of the pile in the field are often costly and time-consuming. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a hybrid machine-learning to predict the axial load capacity of the pile. In particular, two powerful optimization algorithms named Herd Optimization (PSO) and Genetic... Читать дальше...
