Exxaro realises R16.74bn of 2018 investment pledge, creates 6 712 SA jobs

Coal miner Exxaro’s pledge at the 2018 South African Investment Conference (SAIC) to invest R19.54-billion in projects led to it completing seven megaprojects at operations in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, with as much as 98% of its capital expenditure having been spent with South African suppliers. In turn, this empowered 6 712 people who were directly employed by Exxaro during the construction phase of these projects, while also indirectly impacting as many as 70 000 others who received indirect work in South Africa as a result.

A novel class of bed net that kills mosquitoes resistant to traditional insecticides by making them unable to move or fly, significantly reduces malaria infection in children, according to new research published in The Lancet. Unlike other insecticides which kill the mosquito via the nervous system, the effects of the new bed net mean the mosquito dies from starvation or being unable to fend for itself.

A superhuman effort by an army of volunteers during the UK's first COVID-19 lockdown has resulted in 5.2 million rainfall observations, recorded by hand on paper sheets now stored in the Met Office archives, being added to a digital national record. The record now has significantly more data for pre-1960 and has filled in what was a data black hole pre-1862. The work has revealed some record-breaking 19th century weather, which is published in a new paper.

Three years after Cyclone Idai devastated parts of Zimbabwe, officials and aid groups are still counseling victims of gang rapes they say were committed by soldiers deployed to help trapped citizens. In Chimanimani, about 400 kilometers from Harare, a group of women recently attended a meeting organized by the international charity Voluntary Service Overseas to learn about their legal rights under Zimbabwe's constitution.  A 17-year-old girl who attended told VOA she was gang raped by six soldiers and still feels the pain of the attack. While kidney function is known to be related to bleeding event risk, researchers conducted a post-hoc subgroup analysis of the Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events with Rivaroxaban in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease (AFIRE) trial to determine the impact of kidney function on the risk of recurrent bleeding events during antithrombotic therapy. Their analysis revealed that the effect of kidney function on recurrent bleeding risk events was quite large for patients undergoing this treatment.
