New separation process for key radiodiagnostic agent reduces radioactive waste

Phys.org

Nuclear medicine uses technetium-99m among other things for tumor diagnostics. With over 30 million applications worldwide each year, it is the most widely used radioisotope. The precursor material, molybdenum-99, is mainly produced in research reactors. A study at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) now shows options to significantly reduce the radioactive waste produced during processing to a medical product.

U.S. trade chief Tai declines to say if Taiwan will be part of Indo-Pacific pact

AOL.com

By Michael Martina and David Lawder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Thursday declined to say if Taiwan would be invited to join the Biden administration's Indo-Pacific economic plan, spurring Senate criticism that excluding the island would be a missed opportunity.

Taiwan has voiced its desire to be a "full member" in the forthcoming Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), one part of the administration's effort to counter what it says is Beijing's... Читать дальше...

David Weil’s Defeat on the Senate Floor Is an Outrage

The New Republic

The Democratic Party’s indifference to the plight of working people is matched only by that of the mainstream press. As I write this on Wednesday morning, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal have yet to report that the Democratic Senate voted not to advance the nomination of David Weil to be administrator of the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division. As Politico’s Marianne Levine noted on Twitter, Weil’s is the first Biden nomination to fail on the Senate floor. Читать дальше...

Scientists identify asymmetry in the pressure anomalies of the mid–high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere

Phys.org

In the Southern Hemisphere, a zonally oriented high pressure belt extends around the globe in the subtropics and middle latitudes, while lower pressure covers the high latitudes. The pressure in these two regions fluctuates. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) reflects such fluctuation, which shows a "seesaw" phenomenon of pressure variation in the mid–high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. It is called an "annular mode" because of the belt-shaped pressure anomaly in the middle latitudes, and its structure is zonally symmetric. Читать дальше...

Commercial interests hamper climate work in shipping

Phys.org

Instead of prioritizing energy-efficient, sustainable sea transport, the focus is often on satisfying commercial interests when planning shipping routes. This has been shown by research at the University of Gothenburg, published in Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, which highlights the importance of collaboration for more sustainable shipping.

How giant viruses mature: New evidence from the medusavirus provides insight

Phys.org

Giant viruses represent a unique group of viruses that are similar in size to small bacteria. Medusavirus—a special type of giant virus—was first isolated from a hot spring in Japan. Genetic studies showed that medusavirus was more closely related to eukaryotic cells than to other giant viruses, suggesting that it may hold the key to understanding eukaryotic evolution. Although the details of medusavirus morphology and maturation in infected cells have so far remained elusive, the researchers behind its initial discovery now have some answers.
