The deterioration of the Pueblo Bonito Great House in the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico, USA

Plos.org

by Henry L. Short

Pueblo Bonito is the iconic pre- Columbian structure in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a World Heritage Site in northwestern New Mexico, USA. The structure, dating to about 850–1150 Current Era, and built of quarried sandstones, wooden timbers and a mud mortar, has been the subject of archaeological investigations for over a century. The present study is based on the examination of historical photographs of Pueblo Bonito dating from 1887 to the 1920s. It is a retrospective... Читать дальше...

A proposed cigarette emissions topography protocol reflecting smokers’ natural environment use behavior

Plos.org

by Edward C. Hensel, Risa J. Robinson

Background

The FTC, in 2008, rescinded its 1966 guidance regarding use of the Cambridge Filter Method, noting the yields from the method are relatively poor indicators of tar, nicotine, and carbon monoxide exposure. This article proposes a set of puffing conditions for cigarette emissions testing, with the goal of developing product-specific emissions characterizations which can subsequently be used to realistically model the yield of particulate matter and constituents to the mouth of a smoker... Characterisation of the long-term physical and mental health consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol

Plos.org

by Paul Kuodi, Yanay Gorelik, Michael Edelstein

Background

As of July 2021, there has been more than 185 million documented cases of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infections and more than 4 million deaths globally. Despite more than 90% of documented cases being classified as “recovered” from SARS-CoV-2 infection, a proportion of patients reported a wide variety of persisting symptoms after the initial onset or acute phase of the infection, often referred to as “Long Covid”. As data... Читать дальше...

Mass email risk communication: Lessons learned from COVID-19-triggered campus-wide evictions in Canada and the United States

Plos.org

by Haorui Wu

From an out-of-province/state and international post-secondary student perspective, this article (a) explores mass email risk communication facilitation during the COVID-19-triggered campus-wide evictions in Canada and the United States; and (b) develops relative recommendations to improve mass email risk communication strategies for future emergency response. Investigating mass email risk communication-related impacts on students in a tertiary educational context has revealed... Читать дальше...

The effect of pandemic prevalence on the reported efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines

Plos.org

by Rajeev Sharma, Abhijith Anand

The efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines reported in Phase 3 trials varies from ~45% to ~95%. This study tests the hypothesis that the observed variation in efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates can be explained by the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic at trial sites. To test the proposed hypothesis, we conducted a systematic search following PRISMA guidelines. Our search resulted in 8 vaccine candidates that had reported efficacy data from a total of 20 Phase 3 trials... Читать дальше...

Fast continuous streaming sort in big streaming data environment under fixed-size single storage

Plos.org

by Suluk Chaikhan, Suphakant Phimoltares, Chidchanok Lursinsap

Big streaming data environment concerns a complicated scenario where data to be processed continuously flow into a processing unit and certainly cause a memory overflow problem. This obstructs the adaptation of deploying all existing classic sorting algorithms because the data to be sorted must be entirely stored inside the fixed-size storage including the space in internal and external storage devices. Generally, it is always... Читать дальше...

Standardizing norms for 180 coloured Snodgrass and Vanderwart pictures in Kannada language

Plos.org

by Shrilekha Bangalore, Holly Robson, Arlene J. Astell

This study presents normative data in Kannada for 180 coloured Snodgrass & Vanderwart pictures. Data are presented for naming latency, image agreement, picture-name agreement, familiarity, visual complexity, and age of acquisition (AoA). Sixty-eight native Kannada speaking adults completed all tasks. The effects of the rated variables on naming latency were examined and compared with data on the same variables in other languages.... A novel network based linear model for prioritization of synergistic drug combinations

Plos.org

by Jiaqi Li, Hongyan Xu, Richard A. McIndoe

Drug combination therapies can improve drug efficacy, reduce drug dosage, and overcome drug resistance in cancer treatments. Current research strategies to determine which drug combinations have a synergistic effect rely mainly on clinical or empirical experience and screening predefined pools of drugs. Given the number of possible drug combinations, the speed, and scope to find new drug combinations are very limited using these methods. Due to... Читать дальше...

Multilevel predictors of climate change beliefs in Africa

Plos.org

by Juan B. González, Alfonso Sánchez

Although Africa is the most vulnerable region to climate change, little research has focused on how climate change is perceived by Africans. Using random forest methodology, we analyze survey and climate data from second-order political boundaries to explore what predicts climate change beliefs in Africa. We include five different dimensions of climate change beliefs: climate change awareness, belief in anthropogenic climate change, risk perception, the need to stop climate change, and self-efficacy.

Population estimation beyond counts—Inferring demographic characteristics

Plos.org

by Noée Szarka, Filip Biljecki

Mapping population distribution at a fine spatial scale is essential for urban studies and planning. Numerous studies, mainly supported by geospatial and statistical methods, have focused primarily on predicting population counts. However, estimating their socio-economic characteristics beyond population counts, such as average age, income, and gender ratio, remains unattended. We enhance traditional population estimation by predicting not only the number of residents in an area... Читать дальше...

Mitonuclear genetic patterns of divergence in the marbled crab, Pachygrapsus marmoratus (Fabricius, 1787) along the Turkish seas

Plos.org

by Cansu Çetin, Andrzej Furman, Evrim Kalkan, Raşit Bilgin

Biogeographical transition zones present good opportunities for studying the effect of the past ice ages on genetic structure of species because secondary contact zones of post-glacial lineages can be formed. In this study, we investigated the population genetic structure of the marbled rock crab, Pachygrapsus marmoratus along the coasts of Turkey. We genotyped 334 individuals from the Black Sea, the Turkish Straits System (TSS), the Aegean, and the Eastern Mediterranean basins.

Reproductive factors and the risk of incident dementia: A cohort study of UK Biobank participants

Plos.org

by Jessica Gong, Katie Harris, Sanne A. E. Peters, Mark Woodward

Background

Women’s reproductive factors have been associated with the risk of dementia; however, these findings remain uncertain. This study aimed to examine the risk of incident all-cause dementia associated with reproductive factors in women and the number of children in both sexes and whether the associations vary by age, socioeconomic status (SES), smoking status, and body mass index (BMI) in the UK Biobank.

Methods... Читать дальше...
