Extracellular vesicles enriched with amylin receptor are cytoprotective against the Aß toxicity in vitro

Plos.org

by Rania Soudy, Ryoichi Kimura, Wen Fu, Aarti Patel, Jack Jhamandas

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are double membrane structures released by all cell types with identified roles in the generation, transportation, and degradation of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) oligomers in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). EVs are thus increasingly recognized to play a neuroprotective role in AD, through their ability to counteract the neurotoxic effects of Aβ, possibly through interactions with specific receptors on cell membranes. The urban wage premium is disappearing in U.S. micropolitan areas

Plos.org

by Shade T. Shutters, J. M. Applegate

A key driver of urbanization is the pursuit of economic opportunities in cities. One such opportunity is the promise of higher wages in larger cities, a phenomenon known as the urban wage premium. While an urban wage premium has been well-documented among U.S. metropolitan areas, little is known about its existence in micropolitan areas, which represent an important link between rural and dense urban areas. Here we measure the power law scaling coefficient... Читать дальше...

Dissecting recurrent waves of pertussis across the boroughs of London

Plos.org

by Arash Saeidpour, Shweta Bansal, Pejman Rohani

Pertussis has resurfaced in the UK, with incidence levels not seen since the 1980s. While the fundamental causes of this resurgence remain the subject of much conjecture, the study of historical patterns of pathogen diffusion can be illuminating. Here, we examined time series of pertussis incidence in the boroughs of Greater London from 1982 to 2013 to document the spatial epidemiology of this bacterial infection and to identify the potential drivers of its percolation. A general framework for predicting the transcriptomic consequences of non-coding variation and small molecules

Plos.org

by Moustafa Abdalla, Mohamed Abdalla

Genome wide association studies (GWASs) for complex traits have implicated thousands of genetic loci. Most GWAS-nominated variants lie in noncoding regions, complicating the systematic translation of these findings into functional understanding. Here, we leverage convolutional neural networks to assist in this challenge. Our computational framework, peaBrain, models the transcriptional machinery of a tissue as a two-stage process: first, predicting the... Читать дальше...

Biosecurity in an age of open science

Plos.org

by James Andrew Smith, Jonas B. Sandbrink

The risk of accidental or deliberate misuse of biological research is increasing as biotechnology advances. As open science becomes widespread, we must consider its impact on those risks and develop solutions that ensure security while facilitating scientific progress. Here, we examine the interaction between open science practices and biosecurity and biosafety to identify risks and opportunities for risk mitigation. Increasing the availability of computational tools... Читать дальше...

U.S. Oil Drillers Ramp Up Output Amid Higher Prices

Oilprice.com

U.S. oil drillers are pumping more crude as international prices remain elevated amid supply uncertainty and demand strength. Citing industry experts, Reuters reported today that continuing supply chain disruptions and labor shortages are being trumped by optimism about demand, and analysts are revising their U.S. oil output forecasts upward. According to consultancy East Daley Capital, the U.S. will end 2022 with oil production averaging 12.86 million bpd, increasing 1.29 million bpd from 2021. Most of this will come from the Permian Basin... Читать дальше...
