Interaction between endogenous microRNAs and virus-derived small RNAs controls viral replication in insect vectors

Plos.org

by Wan Zhao, Qiong Li, Mengqi Sun, Yan Xiao, Feng Cui

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in resisting virus infection in insects. Viruses are recognized by insect RNA interference systems, which generate virus-derived small RNAs (vsRNAs). To date, it is unclear whether viruses employ vsRNAs to regulate the expression of endogenous miRNAs. We previously found that miR-263a facilitated the proliferation of rice stripe virus (RSV) in the insect vector small brown planthopper. However, miR-263a was significantly downregulated by RSV.

Medical students’ perceptions of their preparedness to care for LGBT patients in Taiwan: Is medical education keeping up with social progress?

Plos.org

by Peih-Ying Lu, Anna Shan Chun Hsu, Alexander Green, Jer-Chia Tsai

Introduction

Integrating training on health equity of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in medical education has been challenging globally despite emphasis on the need for medical students to develop competence to provide adequate care for diverse patient groups. This study elicits Taiwanese medical students’ perceptions of their values and preparedness to care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) patients... Читать дальше...

In silico analyses of leptin and leptin receptor of spotted snakehead Channa punctata

Plos.org

by Amrita Bakshi, Umesh Rai

The present study, in addition to molecular characterization of leptin (lepa) and its receptor (lepr) of spotted snakehead Channa punctata, is focussed on physicochemical, structural, evolutionary and selection pressure analyses which are poorly elucidated in teleosts in spite of that existence of these genes is well reported in several fish species. The putative full-length Lep and Lepr of C. punctata showed conserved structural and functional domains, especially... Читать дальше...

Plasma proteomic analysis to identify potential biomarkers of histologic chorioamnionitis in women with preterm premature rupture of membranes

Plos.org

by Ji Eun Lee, Kisoon Dan, Hyeon Ji Kim, Yu Mi Kim, Kyo Hoon Park

Introduction

To identify potential biomarkers in the plasma that could predict histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) in women with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), using shotgun and targeted proteomic analyses.

Methods

This retrospective cohort study included 78 singleton pregnant women with PPROM (24–34 gestational weeks) who delivered within 96 h of blood sampling. Maternal plasma samples were analyzed... Читать дальше...

Research on emergency management of urban waterlogging based on similarity fusion of multi-source heterogeneous data

Plos.org

by Huimin Xiao, Liu Wang, Chunsheng Cui

Global warming has seriously affected the local climate characteristics of cities, resulting in the frequent occurrence of urban waterlogging with severe economic losses and casualties. Aiming to improve the effectiveness of disaster emergency management, we propose a novel emergency decision model embedding similarity algorithms of heterogeneous multi-attribute based on case-based reasoning. First, this paper establishes a multi-dimensional attribute... Читать дальше...

Dynamic response of pre-disintegrated carbonaceous mudstone embankment under multi-lane vehicle load

Plos.org

by Zhongming He, Panpan Wang, Weidi Gong

The purpose of this study is to reveal the response of multi Lane pre disintegrated carbonaceous mudstone embankment under vehicle dynamic load. In this paper, the pre-disintegrated carbonaceous mudstone samples whose fractal dimension meets the requirements are obtained through the indoor disintegration test of carbonaceous mudstone. Geotechnical basic tests such as particle analysis experiments, compaction tests, and direct shear tests were carried... Читать дальше...

The effect of framing on attitudes towards Alzheimer’s disease. A comparative study between younger and older adults

Plos.org

by Fátima Cuadrado, Adoración Antolí, Bernardino Fernández-Calvo

The stigma and negative attitudes surrounding Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are reinforced by the prevalence of their negative representations. This study aimed to determine how AD framing influences attitudes towards AD and whether this influence differs between younger and older people. Additionally, the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) was used to examine the mediating role that emotions induced by different frames may have in bringing about attitude change. Читать дальше...
