Keep quiet in case the PN wakes up – Victor Calleja

Times of Malta

Back in antediluvian times when the PN was in power in the 1960s, Labour propagandists came up with a winner of a slogan. It went: “Shh. Tgħajjatx għax tqajjem il-gvern.” Loosely translated it means: “Don’t shout lest you wake up the government.” It worked. It made people laugh. It made even diehard supporters of the PN, then led by Giorgio Borg Olivier, snigger. The government, the joke implied, was asleep, inactive, comatose, practically brain- and body-dead. Fifty or so years later, the party is in opposition. Читать дальше...

Things may improve for IT after Q2; Adani foray may hurt Voda, not Airtel or Jio: Deepak Shenoy

Economictimes.indiatimes.com

“Adani will be bidding for 5G but I think it is a little premature to look at them. They are not a consumer company per se. They have not built a consumer internet or a telecom company or the kind of business that something like that requires in the past and which Reliance had done. The problem really lies with the Vodafone-Idea and not really with the Bharti or Reliance, both of whom have relatively stronger balance sheets.”

Allow refugees to vote and give them jobs, government urged

Times of Malta

The government is being urged to open civil service vacancies to refugees and allow them to vote and contest national elections, following an investigation into asylum seekers’ battle against poverty. According to research findings being published by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and Aditus Foundation tomorrow, a steep rise in the cost of living, rent prices and stagnant wages are the main contributors to poverty among asylum seekers. While those interviewed acknowledged these challenges were also faced by Maltese residents... Читать дальше...

Editorial: Unaffordable cost of congestion

Times of Malta

Driving around Malta can be a formidable challenge, characterised by frayed tempers, lack of courtesy, inevitable diversions, frequent delays and, in the larger scheme of things, the imposition of increasingly unaffordable costs on the country. In the latest country report on Malta, the European Commission says that the so-called external costs of transport amount to about €400 million per year, or 3.6 per cent of the island’s gross domestic product, estimated in terms of congestion, noise, air pollution and increased greenhouse emissions. Times of Malta

Secular dating is anti-Christ While visiting St John’s Co-Cathedral, I was interested in the educational video about the great Caravaggio and his paintings there. However, I was offended that dates used in the video referred to “CE” - the common era. This offensive secular means of referring to dates seeks to supplant Christianity from our common shared experience. Are non-believers really so disturbed by the use of BC and AD? I would suggest they have no right to be. And in the house of God!... Читать дальше...

Cheap lives and shifting alliances – Aleks Farrugia

Times of Malta

Just a year ago, the British newspaper The Guardian published an interview with Zeynab Serekaniye, a Kurdish woman who joined the militia to fight the Islamic Caliphate, or IS as it is better known. The then 26-year-old was hailed, alongside the other Kurdish women fighting IS, as a hero whose relentless resistance to the Caliphate helped to keep this fundamentalist organisation in check. Less than a year after this interview, Serekaniye and her fellow fighters were sold off to Turkey, their historical enemy... Читать дальше...
