When proxy-driven learning is no better than random: The consequences of representational incompleteness

Plos.org

by Justin Zobel, Felisa J. Vázquez-Abad, Pauline Lin

Machine learning is widely used for personalisation, that is, to tune systems with the aim of adapting their behaviour to the responses of humans. This tuning relies on quantified features that capture the human actions, and also on objective functions—that is, proxies – that are intended to represent desirable outcomes. However, a learning system’s representation of the world can be incomplete or insufficiently rich, for example if users’... Читать дальше...

The impact of flooding on firm performance and economic growth

Plos.org

by Xiaofei Pan, Buhui Qiu

Using comprehensive flood data from China, we find a significant, negative impact of flooding on firm performance, which is mainly driven by unexpected flooding. We use multiple identification strategies to address endogeneity concerns and find that the documented impact of flooding on firm performance is likely causal. The impact is more pronounced for firms with more tangible asset investment, firms located in cities with low government quality, firms facing tight financial constraints... Читать дальше...

Genotype-phenotype associations in familial exudative vitreoretinopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis on more than 3200 individuals

Plos.org

by Xiaona Wang, Jun Chen, Hui Xiong, Xuhui Yu

Objective

To systematically review the relationship between genotypes and clinical phenotypes of Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) to support risk estimation and therapeutic decisions.

Design

Systematic review with meta-analysis.

Data sources

The data of our study were collected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, CBM, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WAN FANG and VIP databases since inception to August 2021. Читать дальше...

An empirical analysis based on a panel threshold model of the effect of Internet development on the efficiency of Chinese government public service supply

Plos.org

by Yongjie Wang, Yuan Liu, Yuqun Hu

With the development of information technology, improving the efficiency of public services with the help of the Internet has become an important work of local governments. However, under different institutional environments, the impact mechanism of Internet development on the supply efficiency of government public services is still unclear. Based on China’s interprovincial panel data from 2011 to 2019, this paper constructs a threshold effect model, sets... Читать дальше...

Pandora’s Box: A spatiotemporal assessment of elephant-train casualties in Assam, India

Plos.org

by Rekib Ahmed, Anup Saikia

Railways are an indispensable component of sustainable transportation systems, but also exact a toll on wildlife. Wild Asian elephants are often killed by trains in Assam, India, where we assess temporal variations in the occurrences of elephant-train collisions (ETCs) and casualties during 1990–2018. This study also assesses spatially varying relationships between elephant-train collision (ETC) rates and elephant and train densities in the adjoining 10 km2 grid... Читать дальше...

Employability skills for MICE management in the context of ICTs

Plos.org

by Xiao Liu, Randy Seevers, Hongyi Lin

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) applications have become a vital part for MICE industry. MICE higher education is expected to provide their graduates with essential management knowledge and ICTs operational skills to meet the industry demands on the rise. This empirical study investigates the perceptions of employability skills for MICE management in the context of ICTs. Based on the questionnaire (n = 95), an initial 16 employability... Machine learning-based estimation of riverine nutrient concentrations and associated uncertainties caused by sampling frequencies

Plos.org

by Shengyue Chen, Zhenyu Zhang, Juanjuan Lin, Jinliang Huang

Accurate and sufficient water quality data is essential for watershed management and sustainability. Machine learning models have shown great potentials for estimating water quality with the development of online sensors. However, accurate estimation is challenging because of uncertainties related to models used and data input. In this study, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and back-propagation neural network (BPNN)... Читать дальше...

Assessment of the consistency of health and demographic surveillance and household survey data: A demonstration at two HDSS sites in The Gambia

Plos.org

by Momodou Jasseh, Anne J. Rerimoi, Georges Reniers, Ian M. Timæus

Objective

To assess whether an adapted Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) like cross-sectional household survey with full pregnancy histories can demonstrate the validity of health and demographic surveillance (HDSS) data by producing similar population structural characteristics and childhood mortality indicators at two HDSS sites in The Gambia–Farafenni and Basse.

Methods

A DHS-type survey was conducted of 2,580 households in the Farafenni HDSS... Читать дальше...

The meiotic cohesin subunit REC8 contributes to multigenic adaptive evolution of autopolyploid meiosis in Arabidopsis arenosa

Plos.org

by Chris Morgan, Emilie Knight, Kirsten Bomblies

Genome duplication, which leads to polyploidy, poses challenges to the meiotic segregation of the now-multiple homologous chromosome copies. Genome scan data showed previously that adaptation to polyploid meiosis in autotetraploid Arabidopsis arenosa is likely multigenic, involving genes encoding interacting proteins. But what does this really mean? Functional follow-up studies to genome scans for multigenic traits remain rare in most systems... Читать дальше...

AC-PCoA: Adjustment for confounding factors using principal coordinate analysis

Plos.org

by Yu Wang, Fengzhu Sun, Wei Lin, Shuqin Zhang

Confounding factors exist widely in various biological data owing to technical variations, population structures and experimental conditions. Such factors may mask the true signals and lead to spurious associations in the respective biological data, making it necessary to adjust confounding factors accordingly. However, existing confounder correction methods were mainly developed based on the original data or the pairwise Euclidean distance,... Читать дальше...

Fides: Reliable trust-region optimization for parameter estimation of ordinary differential equation models

Plos.org

by Fabian Fröhlich, Peter K. Sorger

Ordinary differential equation (ODE) models are widely used to study biochemical reactions in cellular networks since they effectively describe the temporal evolution of these networks using mass action kinetics. The parameters of these models are rarely known a priori and must instead be estimated by calibration using experimental data. Optimization-based calibration of ODE models on is often challenging, even for low-dimensional problems. Multiple hypotheses... Читать дальше...
