Demonstration of three-dimensional contact point determination and contour reconstruction during active whisking behavior of an awake rat

Plos.org

by Lucie A. Huet, Hannah M. Emnett, Mitra J. Z. Hartmann

The rodent vibrissal (whisker) system has been studied for decades as a model of active touch sensing. There are no sensors along the length of a whisker; all sensing occurs at the whisker base. Therefore, a large open question in many neuroscience studies is how an animal could estimate the three-dimensional (3D) location at which a whisker makes contact with an object. In the present work we simulated the shape of a real rat whisker... Читать дальше...

A simple kit to use computational notebooks for more openness, reproducibility, and productivity in research

Plos.org

by Ludmilla Figueiredo, Cédric Scherer, Juliano Sarmento Cabral

The ubiquitous use of computational work for data generation, processing, and modeling increased the importance of digital documentation in improving research quality and impact. Computational notebooks are files that contain descriptive text, as well as code and its outputs, in a single, dynamic, and visually appealing file that is easier to understand by nonspecialists. Traditionally used by data scientists when producing reports and informing decision-making... Читать дальше...

Mathematical modeling to understand the role of bivalent thrombin-fibrin binding during polymerization

Plos.org

by Michael A. Kelley, Karin Leiderman

Thrombin is an enzyme produced during blood coagulation that is crucial to the formation of a stable clot. Thrombin cleaves soluble fibrinogen into fibrin, which polymerizes and forms an insoluble, stabilizing gel around the growing clot. A small fraction of circulating fibrinogen is the variant γA/γ′, which has been associated with high-affinity thrombin binding and implicated as a risk factor for myocardial infarctions, deep vein thrombosis, and coronary artery disease. Optimal control methods for nonlinear parameter estimation in biophysical neuron models

Plos.org

by Nirag Kadakia

Functional forms of biophysically-realistic neuron models are constrained by neurobiological and anatomical considerations, such as cell morphologies and the presence of known ion channels. Despite these constraints, neuron models still contain unknown static parameters which must be inferred from experiment. This inference task is most readily cast into the framework of state-space models, which systematically takes into account partial observability and measurement noise. Читать дальше...

The osteogenetic activities of mesenchymal stem cells in response to Mg2+ ions and inflammatory cytokines: A numerical approach using fuzzy logic controllers

Plos.org

by Jalil Nourisa, Berit Zeller-Plumhoff, Regine Willumeit-Römer

Magnesium (Mg2+) ions are frequently reported to regulate osteogenic activities of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In this study, we propose a numerical model to study the regulatory importance of Mg2+ ions on MSCs osteoblastic differentiation in the presence of an inflammatory response. A fuzzy logic controller was formulated to receive the concentrations of Mg2+ ions and the inflammatory cytokines of TNF-α, IL-10, IL-1β, and... Читать дальше...

Radical triads, not pairs, may explain effects of hypomagnetic fields on neurogenesis

Plos.org

by Jess Ramsay, Daniel R. Kattnig

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis and hippocampus-dependent cognition in mice have been found to be adversely affected by hypomagnetic field exposure. The effect concurred with a reduction of reactive oxygen species in the absence of the geomagnetic field. A recent theoretical study suggests a mechanistic interpretation of this phenomenon in the framework of the Radical Pair Mechanism. According to this model, a flavin-superoxide radical pair, born in the singlet spin configuration... Читать дальше...

Graph-based algorithms for Laplace transformed coalescence time distributions

Plos.org

by Gertjan Bisschop

Extracting information on the selective and demographic past of populations that is contained in samples of genome sequences requires a description of the distribution of the underlying genealogies. Using the Laplace transform, this distribution can be generated with a simple recursive procedure, regardless of model complexity. Assuming an infinite-sites mutation model, the probability of observing specific configurations of linked variants within small haplotype blocks... Читать дальше...

Tianwen-3: China’s Mars sample return mission

The Planetary Society

China's Tianwen-3 aims to be the first to collect samples from Mars and deliver them to Earth, potentially landing back home two years ahead of the NASA and the European Space Agency MSR project

Using governance to spur, not stall, data access for analytics

Technology Review

Data governance has historically been a serious bottleneck for analytics. While managing data to ensure it complies with policies and regulations is important, these processes can also make it difficult to locate and access data. Businesses that govern data at scale, in real time, and in the cloud often find the situation even more complicated.…

'Walking Dead' Dispute Over Profits Lives On

The Wall Street Journal

AMC’s hit zombie-apocalypse drama “The Walking Dead” is ending this November after a 12-year run on cable TV, but a legal fight over profits from the show continues.
