Composted invasive plant Ageratina adenophora enhanced barley (Hordeum vulgare) growth and soil conditions

Plos.org

by Hai Liu, Qing Zhao, Yanhua Cheng

Ageratina adenophora originating from central America has flooded forests, pastures, and farmland in more than 40 tropical and subtropical countries, causing huge ecological disasters and economic losses. In this paper, we intended to use a complex inoculum composed of Pseudomonas putita and Clostridium thermocellum to in-situ compost A. adenophora debris and then to compare the phytotoxicity of extracts from uncomposted and composted A. adenophora (UCA... Challenges and coping mechanisms among women living with unrepaired obstetric fistula in Ethiopia: A phenomenological study

Plos.org

by Bekana Fekecha Hurissa, Zewdie Birhanu Koricha, Lelisa Sena Dadi

Introduction

Obstetric fistula remains a debilitating complication of childbirth and maternal morbidity in developing countries. Few studies document the challenges and coping mechanisms among women living with obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the challenges and coping mechanisms among women with obstetric fistula in Ethiopia.

Methods

A phenomenological study was employed among... Читать дальше...

Tracking and perceiving diverse motion signals: Directional biases in human smooth pursuit and perception

Plos.org

by Xiuyun Wu, Miriam Spering

Human smooth pursuit eye movements and motion perception behave similarly when observers track and judge the motion of simple objects, such as dots. But moving objects in our natural environment are complex and contain internal motion. We ask how pursuit and perception integrate the motion of objects with motion that is internal to the object. Observers (n = 20) tracked a moving random-dot kinematogram with their eyes and reported the object’s perceived direction. Читать дальше...

Testing the practical utility of implicit measures of beliefs for predicting drunk driving

Plos.org

by Femke Cathelyn, Pieter Van Dessel, Jan De Houwer

Despite the potential benefits of implicit measures over self-report measures, they are rarely used in real-world contexts to predict behavior. Two potential reasons are that (a) traditional implicit measures typically show low predictive validity and (b) the practical utility of implicit measures has hardly been investigated. The current studies test the practical utility of a new generation of implicit measures for predicting drunk driving. Читать дальше...

Foot rubbing evaluation of friction between shoe and flooring

Plos.org

by Kei Shibata, Akihiro Ohnishi

A simple and inexpensive method to evaluate slip resistance that can be readily introduced into the workplace is required. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between a simple sensory evaluation of anti-slipperiness by foot rubbing in standing and sitting positions and the actual friction properties obtained with in situ measurements at slip onset and during sliding. We also verified the possibility of identifying a hazardous area with a... Читать дальше...

A machine learning approach in the non-invasive prediction of intracranial pressure using Modified Photoplethysmography

Plos.org

by Anmar Abdul-Rahman, William Morgan, Dao-Yi Yu

The ideal Intracranial pressure (ICP) estimation method should be accurate, reliable, cost-effective, compact, and associated with minimal morbidity/mortality. To this end several described non-invasive methods in ICP estimation have yielded promising results, however the reliability of these techniques have yet to supersede invasive methods of ICP measurement. Over several publications, we described a novel imaging method of Modified Photoplethysmography... Читать дальше...

Identification and mitigation of high-risk pregnancy with the Community Maternal Danger Score Mobile Application in Gboko, Nigeria

Plos.org

by Rajan Bola, Fanan Ujoh, Ronald Lett

Introduction

Risk analyses within rural regions of Nigeria are not routinely conducted, yet could help inform access to skilled birth care. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the proportion of pregnant women at risk for maternal mortality or morbidity in Benue State, Nigeria by analysing data collected during routine antenatal visits and through the Community Maternal Danger Score (CMDS), a validated risk-analysis tool.

Methods

Two cohorts... Читать дальше...

Projection in genomic analysis: A theoretical basis to rationalize tensor decomposition and principal component analysis as feature selection tools

Plos.org

by Y-h. Taguchi, Turki Turki

Identifying differentially expressed genes is difficult because of the small number of available samples compared with the large number of genes. Conventional gene selection methods employing statistical tests have the critical problem of heavy dependence of P-values on sample size. Although the recently proposed principal component analysis (PCA) and tensor decomposition (TD)-based unsupervised feature extraction (FE) has often outperformed these statistical test-based methods... Correlation of Sedline-generated variables and clinical signs with anaesthetic depth in experimental pigs receiving propofol

Plos.org

by Alessandro Mirra, Claudia Spadavecchia, Olivier Levionnois

Most of currently available electroencephalographic (EEG)-based tools to assess depth of anaesthesia have not been studied or have been judged unreliable in pigs. Our primary aim was to investigate the dose-effect relationship between increasing propofol dose and variables generated by the EEG-based depth of anaesthesia monitor Sedline in pigs. A secondary aim was to compare the anaesthetic doses with clinical outcomes commonly... Читать дальше...

Computer-assisted analysis of polysomnographic recordings improves inter-scorer associated agreement and scoring times

Plos.org

by Diego Alvarez-Estevez, Roselyne M. Rijsman

Study objectives

To investigate inter-scorer agreement and scoring time differences associated with visual and computer-assisted analysis of polysomnographic (PSG) recordings.

Methods

A group of 12 expert scorers reviewed 5 PSGs that were independently selected in the context of each of the following tasks: (i) sleep staging, (ii) scoring of leg movements, (iii) detection of respiratory (apneic-related) events, and (iv) of electroencephalographic (EEG) arousals.
