UN Appeals for Humanitarian Corridor to Access Haiti Fuel

Voice of America

The United Nations and humanitarian agencies called Thursday for the immediate opening of a humanitarian corridor in Haiti to allow fuel to be accessed at the country’s main fuel terminal. “What we need is to unblock the fuel terminal so we can get fuel to pump clean water, to reopen the hospitals, to allow families to get access to potable water,” said Ulrika Richardson, the U.N. resident and humanitarian coordinator for Haiti. The Varreux Terminal, which is Haiti’s main entry point for fuel... Читать дальше...

Gonzalez v. Google, an extraordinarily high-stakes tech policy case that the Supreme Court announced it will hear on Monday, emerged from a horrible act of mass murder. Nohemi Gonzalez was a 23-year-old American studying in Paris, who was killed after individuals affiliated with the terrorist group ISIS opened fire on a café where she and her friends were eating dinner. According to her family’s lawyers, she was one of 129 people killed during a November 2015 wave of violence in Paris that ISIS claimed responsibility for. Читать дальше...

The pandemic could have changed how employers think about layoffs

1newsday.com

The labor market is starting to slow down. Job openings have fallen, and employers are adding fewer jobs to the economy compared to earlier in the year. Although that may seem dim, economists say there is reason to believe that some employers could be more hesitant than in the past to lay off workers in a potential economic downturn. In August, job openings fell to 10.1 million, down about 1.1 million openings from the month before, according to Labor Department data released on Tuesday. The same month... Читать дальше...

The FBI’s murder rate mystery

1newsday.com

The number of murders rose nationally in 2021, according to new data released by the FBI on Wednesday. Or maybe it didn’t. If the FBI’s estimate is accurate, it would mean there were more murders in the US in 2021 than any year since 1994, with the highest murder rate since 1996. But that’s a big “if.” After a change in the FBI’s reporting system, nearly half of law enforcement agencies nationwide didn’t report a full year’s worth of data on crimes in their jurisdiction for 2021. The estimate was reached without data from New York City... Читать дальше...

Sen. Rubio and FEMA chief on recovery from Ian’s devastation: ‘I don’t think it has a comparison’

1newsday.com

Sen. Marco Rubio and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell on Sunday detailed the destruction Ian wreaked in Florida as Rubio said there's no "comparison" between the deadly hurricane and past storms. "I don't think it has a comparison, not in Florida," Rubio, R-Fla., told "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl. "Fort Myers Beach no longer exists. It'll have to be rebuilt. It'll be something different. It was a slice of old Florida that you can't recapture." "There is a lot of devastation. Читать дальше...

1newsday.com

The National Archives has still not recovered all the presidential records that should have been turned over at the end of the Trump administration, according to a new letter to Congress from the acting archivist. "We do know that we do not have custody of everything we should," Debra Steidel Wall, acting archivist of the United States, said in her letter to Rep.
