Last weekend's California Pacific Conference volleyball matches established a clear fact—the final three weeks of the conference season is going to be a fight to the finish.  With eight teams battling for six postseason berths, and only five and a half games separating them, every set, every match, every outcome will have a bearing on who will advance into the playoffs, which will begin on Nov. 10 at Saint Katherine in San Marcos, Calif.

UC Merced upset Embry-Riddle 2-0 on its home pitch on Saturday, handing the Eagles their first conference loss in 10 matches this season.   Kevin Capetillo scored twice in the second half and Marco Sobrevilla anchored a stingy defense that handed the potent ERAU offense its first shutout of the season, and the first time the Eagles have been blanked in any Cal Pac game since the Bobcats held them without a goal back on Sept. 29, 2019.

With two weeks remaining on the California Pacific Conference regular season schedule, 10 teams still are in contention for the six spots in the postseason tournament.  Embry-Riddle, which inched up to No. 17 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, secured a semifinal berth with its 2-1 win at UC Merced last Saturday, and the Eagles need only one point or a loss or tie by second-place Westcliff to secure the top seed, the regular season title, and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.
