He’s the Toronto Raptors’ biggest fan. He always sits in the same floor seat at Scotiabank Arena. He’s so recognizable that he can often be seen chatting with players and coaches from the opposing teams.
He’s apparently even got a fan in Warriors coach Steve Kerr.
And the most surprising thing about this superfan? It’s not Drake who we’re talking about.
Meet Nav Bhatia, a man we’ll be seeing a lot of when the Warriors play in Toronto in the first two games of the NBA Finals beginning Thursday night.
Who is this mustachioed man wearing a turban who is constantly leaving his baseline seat near the Raptors bench to cheer on his beloved team while wearing his “Superfan 1” jersey? Thanks to a series of tweets from Toronto-based reporter Muhammad Lila, we got a wonderful glimpse into what makes this 67-year-old Sikh such an inspiration.
That while the world is building walls, Canada is building bridges.
A guy like @superfan_nav is our best symbol of that.
He’s not just a guy from Toronto. He *is* Toronto.
How can anyone not appreciate how the good-natured Bhatia built a better life for himself since arriving in Toronto as an Indian immigrant in the 1980s? He dealt with racism — “They used to call me towelhead, Paki, sheet head, you name it,” Bhatia told the Toronto Globe and Mail. “I realized I had to be better than they were in order to survive.”
He couldn’t find work as an engineer so he found a job selling cars. Boy did he sell cars.
Bhatia sold 127 cars within 90 days, which was a record at the dealership where he was working. He kept selling and selling until he got so successful that he bought his own dealership. And then he bought another.
As a man who doesn’t smoke or drink, Bhatia said he found Raptors basketball when he was looking for a hobby and jumped aboard their bandwagon the first night of their inaugural season of 1995. He hasn’t left their side since.
Nowadays, the man who once struggled to pay his $300 per month rent for his tiny basement apartment now spends $300,000 per season to provide tickets for underprivileged kids in the Toronto area.
Come to think of it, when it comes to being the Raptors’ biggest fan maybe we should be talking about Drake. After all, one of Drake’s earlier hits could describe Bhatia’s journey from India to Toronto Raptors institution perfectly.
