Optimization of Biodesulfurization of sour heavy crude oil

Plos.org

by Wisam Mohammed Kareem Al-khazaali, Seyed Ahmad Ataei

Biodesulfurization of fossil fuels is a promising method for treating the sour oil due to its environmental friendliness and ability to get rid of the recalcitrant organosulfur compounds. In this study, many types of microorganisms such as Ralstonia eutropha, Rhodococcus erythropolis, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans applied on a sour heavy crude oil (sulfur content was 4.4%). Also, a colony isolated... Читать дальше...

Liu-type pretest and shrinkage estimation for the conditional autoregressive model

Plos.org

by Marwan Al-Momani

Spatial regression models have recently received a lot of attention in a variety of fields to address the spatial autocorrelation effect. One important class of spatial models is the Conditional Autoregressive (CA). Theses models have been widely used to analyze spatial data in various areas, as geography, epidemiology, disease surveillance, civilian planning, mapping of poorness signals and others. In this article, we propose the Liu-type pretest, shrinkage and positive... Читать дальше...

Maternal effect in salinity tolerance of Daphnia–One species, various patterns?

Plos.org

by Andrzej Mikulski, Danuta Mazurczak

We experimentally tested the hypothesis that individuals from a single species but genetically different exposed to the same chemical stress factor are able to realize opposite life history strategies–they can invest more resources in current reproduction and release neonates well-prepared to harmful condition or they can invest in their own safety as well as future reproductions and release neonates of poor quality condition. In order to do this, we used the Daphnia-salinity model... Читать дальше...

Did place-based industrial policy promote regional economic growth? ---- Evidence from China

Plos.org

by Jianzhao Liu, Na Li, Xueli Du

Whether the place-based industrial policy promotes regional economic growth is a hot issue in the field of regional industrial economic practice. As a major national strategy in China, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei industrial coordinated development policy has been implemented more than 8 years. Verifying its effect on regional economic growth and revealing the policy action path will help to further optimize the policy implementation process through feedback. Читать дальше...

Gypsum and carbon amendments influence carbon fractions in two soils in Ohio, USA

Plos.org

by Maninder K. Walia, Warren A. Dick

Carbon sequestration as influenced by management practices such as soil amendments is not yet fully understood. Gypsum and crop residues can improve soil properties, but few studies have focused on their combined effect on soil C fractions. The objective of this greenhouse study was to determine how treatments affected different forms of C, i.e., total C, permanganate oxidizable C (POXC), and inorganic C in 5 soil layers (0–2, 2–4, 4–10, 10–25, and 25–40 cm). Conditional permeabilization of the P. falciparum plasma membrane in infected cells links cation influx to reduced membrane integrity

Plos.org

by Mariame Sylla, Ankit Gupta, Jinfeng Shao, Sanjay A. Desai

The intracellular human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, uses the PfATP4 cation pump to maintain Na+ and H+ homeostasis in parasite cytosol. PfATP4 is the target of advanced antimalarial leads, which produce many poorly understood metabolic disturbances within infected erythrocytes. Here, we expressed the mammalian ligand-gated TRPV1 ion channel at the parasite plasma membrane to study ion regulation and examine the effects of cation leak. Читать дальше...

Blood pressure status affects atrial fibrillation in diabetic end-stage renal disease

Plos.org

by Kyung-Do Han, YouMi Hwang, Sang Hyun Park

Introduction

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is increasing as the elderly population continues to increase. Chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension are known risk factors for AF. Since multimorbidity exists in chronic kidney disease, it is difficult to determine the impact of hypertension alone. Furthermore, little is known about the impact of hypertension on predicting AF in diabetic end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Here... Читать дальше...

High-resolution rural poverty mapping in Pakistan with ensemble deep learning

Plos.org

by Felix S. K. Agyemang, Rashid Memon, Levi John Wolf, Sean Fox

High resolution poverty mapping supports evidence-based policy and research, yet about half of all countries lack the survey data needed to generate useful poverty maps. To overcome this challenge, new non-traditional data sources and deep learning techniques are increasingly used to create small-area estimates of poverty in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) trained on satellite imagery... Читать дальше...

Unconsciousness and amnesia after cross-body electric shocks not involving the head–A prospective cohort study

Plos.org

by Karin Biering, Anette Kærgaard, Ole Carstensen, Kent J. Nielsen

Introduction

Little is known about how electrical current passes through the human body except that it follows the physical rule of least resistance. Whether organs remote from the shortest route of the current can be affected is unknown, as different types of tissue vary in resistance. This may explain why some people exposed to electrical injury report symptoms from the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we examined... Читать дальше...
