Comparison of the safety between propylthiouracil and methimazole with hyperthyroidism in pregnancy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Plos.org

by Yue Liu, Qianqian Li, Yang Xu, Yixin Chen, Yanyan Men

Objective

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the safety of the anti-thyroid drugs (ATDs) propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole (MMI) in the treatment of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy.

Method

From inception until June 2, 2022, all available studies were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, EBSCO, Embase, Scopus, and CNKI.

Result

Thirteen articles satisfying the inclusion criteria were examined. Читать дальше...

Inflorescences of Cuscuta (Convolvulaceae): Diversity, evolution and relationships with breeding systems and fruit dehiscence modes

Plos.org

by Morgan Glofcheskie, Tristan Long, Anna Ho, Mihai Costea

Cuscuta (dodder) includes ca. 200 species of plant obligate stem parasites with enormous ecological and economical significance. Inflorescences have been historically used in Cuscuta for species descriptions and identification keys, but no comprehensive study exists to date. The main objectives of this study were to survey the diversity and evolution of inflorescences and to uncover their possible form-function relationships. The... Читать дальше...

Offloading under cognitive load: Humans are willing to offload parts of an attentionally demanding task to an algorithm

Plos.org

by Basil Wahn, Laura Schmitz, Frauke Nora Gerster, Matthias Weiss

In the near future, humans will increasingly be required to offload tasks to artificial systems to facilitate daily as well as professional activities. Yet, research has shown that humans are often averse to offloading tasks to algorithms (so-called “algorithmic aversion”). In the present study, we asked whether this aversion is also present when humans act under high cognitive load. Participants performed an attentionally... Читать дальше...

Summation of activation at the branch-stem transition of Mimosa pudica; a comparison with summation in cardiac tissue

Plos.org

by Jacques M. T. de Bakker, Ruben Coronel

In Mimosa pudica plants, local and global responses to environmental stimuli are associated with different types of electrical activity. Non-damaging stimuli (e.g. cooling) generate action potentials (APs), whereas damaging stimuli (e.g. heating) are associated with variation potentials (VPs). Local cooling of Mimosa branches resulted in APs that propagated up to the branch-stem interface and caused drooping of the branch (local response). This electrical activation did not pass the interface. Читать дальше...

Assessing the effects of ROO and tariff margin on China-ASEAN free trade agreement utilization

Plos.org

by Yahui Qu, Ruxu Zhang

This study investigates the effects of rule of origin (ROOs) and tariff margin on China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) utilization. Using a sample of 40,474 product-level observations with China’s imports from ASEAN countries during the period 2015 to 2021 and adopting the Logit model estimation methods, we found that larger tariff margin positively affects the use of CAFTA, whereas, the rules of origin show a negative effect on the CAFTA utilization. In order to assess the specific impact of two effects... Читать дальше...

Introducing an rbcL and a trnL reference library to aid in the metabarcoding analysis of foraged plants from two semi-arid eastern South African savanna bioregions

Plos.org

by Danielle Botha, Mornè du Plessis, Frances Siebert, Sandra Barnard

Success of a metabarcoding study is determined by the extent of taxonomic coverage and the quality of records available in the DNA barcode reference database used. This study aimed to create an rbcL and a trnL (UAA) DNA barcode sequence reference database of plant species that are potential herbivore foraging targets and commonly found in semi-arid savannas of eastern South Africa. An area-specific species list of 765 species... Читать дальше...

Stochastic modelling of a three-dimensional glycogen granule synthesis and impact of the branching enzyme

Plos.org

by Yvan Rousset, Oliver Ebenhöh, Adélaïde Raguin

In humans, glycogen storage diseases result from metabolic inborn errors, and can lead to severe phenotypes and lethal conditions. Besides these rare diseases, glycogen is also associated to widely spread societal burdens such as diabetes. Glycogen is a branched glucose polymer synthesised and degraded by a complex set of enzymes. Over the past 50 years, the structure of glycogen has been intensively investigated. Yet, the interplay between... Читать дальше...

Shadow enhancers mediate trade-offs between transcriptional noise and fidelity

Plos.org

by Alvaro Fletcher, Zeba Wunderlich, German Enciso

Enhancers are stretches of regulatory DNA that bind transcription factors (TFs) and regulate the expression of a target gene. Shadow enhancers are two or more enhancers that regulate the same target gene in space and time and are associated with most animal developmental genes. These multi-enhancer systems can drive more consistent transcription than single enhancer systems. Nevertheless, it remains unclear why shadow enhancer TF binding... Читать дальше...

Modelling the structures of frameshift-stimulatory pseudoknots from representative bat coronaviruses

Plos.org

by Rohith Vedhthaanth Sekar, Patricia J. Oliva, Michael T. Woodside

Coronaviruses (CoVs) use −1 programmed ribosomal frameshifting stimulated by RNA pseudoknots in the viral genome to control expression of enzymes essential for replication, making CoV pseudoknots a promising target for anti-coronaviral drugs. Bats represent one of the largest reservoirs of CoVs and are the ultimate source of most CoVs infecting humans, including those causing SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. However, the structures... 10 Practices That Have Led To Multiple New Businesses

Paper Blog

Entrepreneurs who experience success with their first startup are often amazed to realize that the risks and fears of doing it right the second time go up, rather than down. Encores are tough, especially in the high-risk world of startups, yet every entrepreneur I know can’t wait to start over and do it again. Sometimes their haste or ego causes them to ignore basics, and they fall hard.
