Research on improved level set image segmentation method

Plos.org

by Mei Zhang, Dan Meng, Lingling Liu, Jinghua Wen

Aiming at the shortcomings of the traditional level set model which only has good robustness to the weak boundary and strong noise of the original target image, this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on the no-weight initialization level set model, introducing bilateral filters and using implicit surface level sets to extract and segment the original target image object more accurately, clearly and intuitively in the evolution process. Rural poverty and labour force participation: Evidence from Indonesia’s Village fund program

Plos.org

by Anu Rammohan, Achmad Tohari

Rural residents account for the bulk of poverty in developing countries. This paper evaluates the impact of Indonesia’s Dana Desa program (Village Fund Program or VFP) on rural poverty and female labour force participation. The VFP, introduced in 2014, was an ambitious national-level village governance program which transferred administrative responsibility and financial resources to Indonesia’s 79,000 plus rural villages, providing them with the autonomy to invest in rural infrastructure... The role of author identities in peer review

Plos.org

by Nihar B. Shah

There is widespread debate on whether to anonymize author identities in peer review. The key argument for anonymization is to mitigate bias, whereas arguments against anonymization posit various uses of author identities in the review process. The Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science (ITCS) 2023 conference adopted a middle ground by initially anonymizing the author identities from reviewers, revealing them after the reviewer had submitted their initial reviews, and... The mindful trajectory: Developmental changes in mentalizing throughout adolescence and young adulthood

Plos.org

by Alex Desatnik, Annie Bird, Avi Shmueli, Ilya Venger, Peter Fonagy

Background

Mentalizing and psychological mindedness are two key, partially overlapping facets of social cognition. While mentalizing refers to the ability to reflect on one’s own mental states and the mental states of others, psychological mindedness describes the ability for self-reflection and the inclination to communicate with others about one’s own mental states.

Purpose

This study examined the development... Читать дальше...

Novel randomization and iterative based algorithms for the transactions assignment in blockchain problem

Plos.org

by Abdullah Bajahzar

This study focuses on the load balancing of the transactions in the blockchain. The problem is how to assign these transactions to the blocks. The objective is to guarantee a load balancing of the workload in the time of blocks. The proposed problem is an NP-hard one. To face the hardness of the studied problem, the challenge is to develop algorithms that solve the problem approximately. Finding an approximate solution is a real challenge. In this paper, nine algorithms are proposed. Читать дальше...

More people, more cats, more parasites: Human population density and temperature variation predict prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii oocyst shedding in free-ranging domestic and wild felids

Plos.org

by Sophie Zhu, Elizabeth VanWormer, Karen Shapiro

Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous zoonotic parasite that can infect warm-blooded vertebrates, including humans. Felids, the definitive hosts, drive T. gondii infections by shedding the environmentally resistant stage of the parasite (oocysts) in their feces. Few studies characterize the role of climate and anthropogenic factors in oocyst shedding among free-ranging felids, which are responsible for the majority of environmental contamination. The role of chronological age in climate change attitudes, feelings, and behavioral intentions: The case of null results

Plos.org

by Liat Ayalon, Senjooti Roy

Past research has stressed the role of age and generation in climate change discourse, worries, and willingness to act. Therefore, the present paper aimed to examine the role of chronological age (as an arbitrary factor, which represents ageism) in lay people’s climate change-related attitudes, feelings, and behavioral intentions. Two experiments in different countries, Australia and Israel, were conducted for this purpose. The first study examined the impact of the age of the speaker... Читать дальше...

Large-scale sports events, sports gambling market and promotion risk management: Theoretical model and case analysis based on option hedging theory

Plos.org

by Qi-an Chen, Xu Zhao, Guohong Zhang

Large-scale sports events have become a good opportunity for major enterprises to promote due to their high social attention; however, they also force enterprises to confront the risks of uncertainty and extreme loss. During the 2018 Russia World Cup, Vatti Co., Ltd.’s promotion activity “If France Wins, Get a Full Refund” suffered double losses economically and reputationally due to France’s victory and the company’s failure to fulfill its promise. This paper uses option hedging theory... Читать дальше...

What makes Sanriku waters the southernmost habitat of northern fur seals? Winter–spring habitat use in relation to oceanographic environments

Plos.org

by Yu Kanaji, Hiroto Murase, Shiroh Yonezaki

The waters off Sanriku (located on the northeastern coast of Honshu Island, Japan) provide the southernmost habitats of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) during winter and spring in the western North Pacific. The southward flowing cold Oyashio current and northward-flowing warm Kuroshio extension mix there, making the area highly productive. Northern fur seals migrate into these waters from the breeding rookeries for feeding, and the locations... Читать дальше...

Associations of childhood hearing loss and adverse childhood experiences in deaf adults

Plos.org

by Wyatte C. Hall, Timothy D. V. Dye, Shazia Siddiqi

Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences have a strong relationship with health disparities across the lifespan. Despite experiencing approximately doubled rates of trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are poorly characterized in deaf populations. We sought to characterize deaf-specific demographic factors and their association with multiple experiences of ACEs before the age of 18 years old. An analytical cross-sectional... Читать дальше...

Structural and biophysical characterization of the secreted, β-helical adhesin EtpA of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli

Plos.org

by Clifford Manyo Ntui, James M. Fleckenstein, Wolf-Dieter Schubert

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a diarrhoeal pathogen associated with high morbidity and mortality especially among young children in developing countries. At present, there is no vaccine for ETEC. One candidate vaccine antigen, EtpA, is a conserved secreted adhesin that binds to the tips of flagellae to bridge ETEC to host intestinal glycans. EtpA is exported through a Gram-negative, two-partner secretion system (TPSS... Читать дальше...

TiO2 NPs-immobilized silica granules: New insight for nano catalyst fixation for hydrogen generation and sustained wastewater treatment

Plos.org

by Nasser A. M. Barakat, Osama M. Irfan, Olfat A. Mohamed

In heterogeneous catalytic processes, immobilization of the functional material over a proper support is a vital solution for reusing and/or avoiding a secondary pollution problem. The study introduces a novel approach for immobilizing R25 NPs on the surface of silica granules using hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination process. Due to the privileged characteristics of the subcritical water, during the hydrothermal treatment process... Читать дальше...
