Cherelle Parker, is up against Republican James Oh, a former city councilman. And Parker has the clear advantage, as the overwhelmingly Democratic city has not had a GOP mayor since Bernard Samuel left office in the early 1950s.

Fighting erupted after the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) detained Ahmad al-Khabil, head of the Deir Ezzor Military Council, on August 27. The violence in several towns and villages in Kurdish-controlled areas of Deir Ezzor province has killed 71 people, mostly fighters but also nine civilians.
