'Unlucky to concede after penalty corner deflection': Savita, Schopman reflect on China defeat

Indians looked unsettled in the big match against the hosts China to suffer a disappointing defeat after China took the lead with a series of penalty corners.

India went down 0-4 to China in the women's hockey semifinals. (AGNS)

 Captain Savita Punia and coach Janneke Schopman pointed to the deflections leading to the first two goals by China as the catalyst in India's 0-4 defeat in the semifinal in the Asian Games 2023 at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium on Thursday.

Chinese were a quick learners. Quick learners always teach you in the end. It’s what happened yesterday in the Asian Games’ women hockey final. India defeated China 7-1 in the first match of Pro-League but could hardly beat them 2-1 in the second. It was in January last year. How the Chinese came close to draw India within 24 hours! They learnt their lessons quickly.

Hangzhou: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team suffered a 0-4 loss against China in the 1st Semi-Final of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. Despite creating multiple chances, India were not able to get on the scoresheet, while China netted four goals through Jiaqi Zhong (25’), Meirong Zou (40’), Meiyu Liang (55’), and Bingfeng GU (60’).

The host China defeated India by 4-0 in the first semi final of the women's hockey event in the 19th Asian Games 2022 at Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium Hangzhou. For the Chinese team Zhong Jiaqi, Zou Meirong, Liang Meiya and Gu Bingfeng each scored a goal.
