A main challenge in human walking is maintaining stability. One strategy to balance the whole body dynamically is to direct the ground reaction forces toward a point above the center of mass, called virtual pivot point (VPP). This strategy could be observed in various experimental studies for human and animal gait. A VPP was also observed when VPP input variables like center of mass or ground reaction forces were perturbed. Читать дальше...

The small non-coding RNA miR-34a is a p53-regulated miRNA that acts as a tumour suppressor of colorectal cancer (CRC). Oncogenesis is also negatively influenced by deregulation of the circadian system in many types of tumours with various genetic backgrounds. As the clock gene per2 was recently recognized as one of the target genes of miR-34a, we focused on the miR-34a-mediated influence on the circadian oscillator in CRC cell lines DLD1 and LoVo... Lipoxygenase (LOX) gene plays an essential role in plant growth, development, and stress response. 15 LOX genes were identified, which were unevenly distributed on chromosomes and divided into three subclasses in this study. In promoter region analysis, many cis-elements were identified in growth and development, abiotic stress response, hormonal response, and light response. qRT-PCR showed that the LOX gene showed tissue specificity in seven tissues... Protected area (PA) connectivity is pivotal for the persistence of wide-ranging wildlife species, but is challenged by habitat loss and fragmentation. We analyzed habitat suitability and connectivity for the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) across PAs in south-western Tanzania in 2000, 2010, and 2019. We quantified land-use changes through remote sensing data; estimated habitat suitability through aerial survey data... Читать дальше...

Coastal dikes are an essential social infrastructure to mitigate tsunami damage. However, there are no clear guidelines on effective dike shapes for reducing tsunami overflow. To examine effective dike shapes, numerical simulations of the amount of tsunami overflow at coastal dikes are conducted with reference to tsunami waveforms caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Results reveal the relationship between the dike shape and the amount... Читать дальше...

The achievement of an active biological entity from environmental DNA is important in the field of phage. In this study, the environmental DNA extracted from hospital wastewater was transferred into Escherichia coli DH10B and Escherichia coli BL21 with chemical transformation and electroporation. After transformation, overnight cultures were filtered and used as phage source. The efficacies of the techniques were evaluated with spot test and double-layer agar assay. Читать дальше...

ObjectivesTo explore the key components when designing best practice inspection interventions, so as to induce high compliance with safety guidelines for laboratory workers.
MethodsFive key components of an inspection intervention, identified from a focus group discussion, were used as the attributes of a discrete choice experiment (DCE). In the DCE, participants were presented with two hypothetical scenarios and asked... Читать дальше...

Considering practical issues such as cost control of hardware facilities in engineering projects, it is a challenge to design a robust safety helmet detection method, which can be implemented on mobile or embedded devices with limited computing power. This paper presents an approach to optimize the BottleneckCSP structure in the YOLOv5 backbone network, which can greatly reduce the complexity of the model without changing the size of the network input and output.... Archaeal pleomorphic viruses belonging to the Pleolipoviridae family represent an enigmatic group as they exhibit unique genomic features and are thought to have evolved through recombination with different archaeal plasmids. However, most of our understanding of the diversity and evolutionary trajectories of this clade comes from a handful of isolated representatives. Here we present 164 new genomes of pleolipoviruses obtained... Читать дальше...

TRPV Ion channels are sophisticated molecular sensors designed to respond to distinct temperature thresholds. The recent surge in cryo-EM structures has provided numerous insights into the structural rearrangements accompanying their opening and closing; however, the molecular mechanisms by which TRPV channels establish precise and robust temperature sensing remain elusive. In this work we employ molecular simulations, multi-ensemble contact analysis... Читать дальше...

Sensory areas of cortex respond more strongly to infrequent stimuli when these violate previously established regularities, a phenomenon known as deviance detection (DD). Previous modeling work has mainly attempted to explain DD on the basis of synaptic plasticity. However, a large fraction of cortical neurons also exhibit firing rate adaptation, an underexplored potential mechanism. Here, we investigate DD in a spiking neuronal network model with two types of short-term plasticity... Читать дальше...
