The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex body of Manipur's Tangkhul Naga community, has criticized Chief Minister N Biren Singh for his statements declaring Tangkhul and Meitei as brothers and making Ukhrul the summer capital. TNL asserts that they know their own history and do not want their land to become a capital of Manipur. They also reject Singh's authority to define the relationship between the Tangkhul tribe and the Meitei community. The Manipur High Court has allowed four tribal organizations to file an appeal against a previous order that directed the state government to recommend Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meitei community. The order had led to sectarian violence and claimed at least 180 lives. The tribal organizations argued that they should have the opportunity to raise objections and challenge the decision.
