Evaluation of new strain (AAD16) of Beauveria bassiana recovered from Japanese rhinoceros beetle: Effects on three coleopteran insects

Plos.org

by Souvic Sarker, Hyong Woo Choi, Un Taek Lim

A strain (AAD16) of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin was isolated from field-collected Japanese rhinoceros beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma (L.) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Its virulence was compared with another strain (ARP14) recovered from a cadaver of Riptortus pedestris (F.) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) focusing on its effect on three coleopteran, i.e., Tenebrio molitor L., A. dichotoma, and Monochamus alternatus Hope. Читать дальше...

Novel ensemble learning approach with SVM-imputed ADASYN features for enhanced cervical cancer prediction

Plos.org

by Raafat M. Munshi

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of female mortality, particularly in developing regions, underscoring the critical need for early detection and intervention guided by skilled medical professionals. While Pap smear images serve as valuable diagnostic tools, many available datasets for automated cervical cancer detection contain missing data, posing challenges for machine learning models’ efficacy. To address these hurdles, this study presents an automated system... Читать дальше...

Individual and environmental variables related to outdoor walking among older adults: Verifying a model to guide the design of interventions targeting outdoor walking

Plos.org

by Yixiu Liu, Nancy M. Salbach, Sandra C. Webber, Ruth Barclay

Objective

To estimate the relationships between individual and environmental variables and outdoor walking (OW) in older adults with OW limitations through verifying a conceptual model.

Methods

Baseline data from 205 older adults participating in a randomized trial of a park-based OW program were analyzed using structural equation modeling. We evaluated a three latent factor model: OW (accelerometry and self-report);... Читать дальше...

“Figuring out your place at a school like this:” Intersectionality and sense of belonging among STEM and non-STEM college students

Plos.org

by Sarah M. Ovink, W. Carson Byrd, Megan Nanney, Abigail Wilson

Background

Students’ sense of belonging in college—an individual’s feelings of contentment, mattering, importance, and “finding one’s place” in a social setting—can influence choice of major and career trajectory. We contribute to the belongingness literature through a mixed methods intersectional study of students attending a STEM-focused public university we call Meadow State University (MSU). We assess the potential for... Читать дальше...

Ketogenic diet preserves muscle mass and strength in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes

Plos.org

by Sol Been Park, Soo Jin Yang

Diabetes is often associated with reduced muscle mass and function. The ketogenic diet (KD) may improve muscle mass and function via the induction of nutritional ketosis. To test whether the KD is able to preserve muscle mass and strength in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), C57BL/6J mice were assigned to lean control, diabetes control, and KD groups. The mice were fed a standard diet (10% kcal from fat) or a high-fat diet (HFD) (60% kcal from fat). The... Читать дальше...

Diagnostic contribution of multi-frequency vibrometry to detection of peripheral neuropathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus compared with nerve conduction studies

Plos.org

by Linnéa Ekman, Lars B. Dahlin, Gert S. Andersson, Eero Lindholm

Aim

The aim was to assess the use of multi-frequency vibrometry (MFV) in detecting diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 1 diabetes in comparison to nerve conduction studies (NCS) and neurothesiometer (NT). Our objectives were to examine how VPTs correlated with NCS parameters, evaluate the efficacy of MFV in distinguishing DPN as well as to investigate whether MFV procedure could be based on fewer frequencies.

Audience segmentation of New Zealand cat owners: Understanding the barriers and drivers of cat containment behavior

Plos.org

by Sarah A. E. Chamberlain, Lynette J. McLeod, Donald W. Hine

Free-roaming companion cats have a detrimental impact on the environment and are at risk of harm. Despite these negative impacts, it is the norm in New Zealand (NZ) to allow companion cats to roam freely and only a minority of cat owners practice cat containment. This study firstly sought to identify what factors act as barriers and drivers of NZ owners’ participation in cat containment, and secondly whether NZ owners could be... Читать дальше...

Predicting saturated and near-saturated hydraulic conductivity using artificial neural networks and multiple linear regression in calcareous soils

Plos.org

by Hasan Mozaffari, Ali Akbar Moosavi, Mohammad Amin Nematollahi

Hydraulic conductivity (Kψ) is one of the most important soil properties that influences water and chemical movement within the soil and is a vital factor in various management practices, like drainage, irrigation, erosion control, and flood protection. Therefore, it is an essential component in soil monitoring and managerial practices. The importance of Kψ in soil-water relationship, difficulties for its measurement in the field... Factors associated with an increased risk of developing pneumonia during acute ischemic stroke hospitalization

Plos.org

by Pornpong Jitpratoom, Adhiratha Boonyasiri

Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is a common complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This single-center retrospective observational study aimed to identify factors associated with SAP and predictors of poor outcomes in hospitalized patients with AIS. The study included patients admitted to Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Hospital in Thailand within 7 days of the onset of AIS between July 2019 and July 2020. The patients were divided according to... Predicting the global potential distribution of two major vectors of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever under conditions of global climate change

Plos.org

by Haoqiang Ji, Xiaohui Wei, Delong Ma, Xiaoxu Wang, Qiyong Liu

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a tick-borne disease that is highly dangerous but often overlooked by the public. To prevent the spread of the disease, it is important to understand the distribution patterns of its vectors’ suitable areas. This study aims to explore the potential global suitability of areas for the vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, including Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma cajennense under both historical and future climate scenarios.
