News media coverage of LGBT identities over 10 years in a 400-million-word corpus

Plos.org

by Reuben Ng, Ting Yu Joanne Chow, Wenshu Yang

Background

This study is the first to analyze LGBT portrayals in a news media dataset over a decade (2010–2020). We selected Singapore as a country of interest, emblematic of a nation grappling with state-encouraged heteronormativity and a remnant colonial law against homosexuality (377A), fraught with calls for its repeal that was only enacted in 2022. Our study is interested in this period bookended by challenge and change, particularly in newspaper portrayals of LGBT narratives. Читать дальше...

Detection and recognition of metal surface corrosion based on CBG-YOLOv5s

Plos.org

by Mingjiao Fu, Zhitong Jia, Lingzhi Wu, Zhendong Cui

The automatic detection of the degree of surface corrosion on metal structures is of significant importance for assessing structural damage and safety. To effectively identify the corrosion status on the surface of coastal metal facilities, this study proposed a CBG-YOLOv5s model for metal surface corrosion detection, based on the YOLOv5s model. Firstly, we integrated the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) into the C3 module and developed the C3CBAM module. Читать дальше...

Association of different milk fat content with coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction risk: A Mendelian randomization study

Plos.org

by Jiacan Wu, Guanghong Tao, Hua Xiao

Background

Numerous observational studies have investigated on the correlation of whole, semi-skimmed, and skimmed milk with coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) risk; However, no consensus has been reached and evidence on any causal links between these exposures and outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to conduct univariate and multivariate Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses, using publicly released genome-wide association... Читать дальше...

Digital economy, innovation factor allocation and industrial structure transformation—A case study of the Yangtze River Delta city cluster in China

Plos.org

by Xinfeng Chang, Zihe Yang, Abdullah

The attainment of regional high-quality development necessitates the critical role of the digital economy in facilitating the transformation of industrial structures. This study intends to investigate the effect of the digital economy on industrial structure transformation from the perspective of innovation factor allocation using a panel dataset of 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region for the period from 2011 to 2020. This paper considers four... Читать дальше...

Spatial ecology of moose in Sweden: Combined Sr-O-C isotope analyses of bone and antler

Plos.org

by Elena Armaroli, Federico Lugli, Anna Cipriani, Thomas Tütken

The study of spatial (paleo)ecology in mammals is critical to understand how animals adapt to and exploit their environment. In this work we analysed the 87Sr/86Sr, δ18O and δ13C isotope composition of 65 moose bone and antler samples from Sweden from wild-shot individuals dated between 1800 and 1994 to study moose mobility and feeding behaviour for (paleo)ecological applications. Sr data were compared with isoscapes of the Scandinavian region... Читать дальше...

Putting theory to the test: An integrated computational/experimental chemostat model of the tragedy of the commons

Plos.org

by Bryan K. Lynn, Patrick De Leenheer, Martin Schuster

Cooperation via shared public goods is ubiquitous in nature, however, noncontributing social cheaters can exploit the public goods provided by cooperating individuals to gain a fitness advantage. Theory predicts that this dynamic can cause a Tragedy of the Commons, and in particular, a ‘Collapsing’ Tragedy defined as the extinction of the entire population if the public good is essential. However, there is little empirical evidence of the Collapsing Tragedy in evolutionary biology. Читать дальше...

Spatio-temporal evolution of sports tourism industry integration: A empirical analysis of Xinjiang in China

Plos.org

by Ke Zhang, Xuehui Mei, Zhengqing Xiao

Since the issuance of the "Guiding Opinions on Vigorously Developing Sports Tourism" in 2016, the integration of sports and tourism has become a strategy in regional economic development. It creates new economic growth points, enhances local images, and promotes cultural communication. In the context of the "Tourism Makes Xinjiang Thrive" strategy, quantitatively investigating the integration of the sports and tourism industries helps people to better... Читать дальше...

A novel and effective method for solving the router nodes placement in wireless mesh networks using reinforcement learning

Plos.org

by Le Huu Binh, Thuy-Van T. Duong

Router nodes placement (RNP) is an important issue in the design and implementation of wireless mesh networks (WMN). This is known as an P-hard problem, which cannot be solved using conventional algorithms. Consequently, approximate optimization strategies are commonly used to solve this problem. With heavy node density and wide-area WMNs, solving the RNP problem using approximation algorithms often faces many difficulties, therefore, a more effective solution is necessary. Читать дальше...

Does wealth equate to happiness? an 11-year panel data analysis exploring socio-economic indicators and social media metrics

Plos.org

by Feng Huang, Huimin Ding, Nuo Han, Fumeng Li, Tingshao Zhu

The Easterlin paradox questions the link between economic growth and national well-being, emphasizing the necessity to explore the impact of economic elasticity, income inequality, and their temporal and spatial heterogeneity on subjective happiness. Despite the importance of these factors, few studies have examined them together, thus ongoing debates about the impact of economics on well-being persist. To fill this gap, our analysis... Soft super-continuity and soft delta-closed graphs

Plos.org

by Dina Abuzaid, Samer Al Ghour, Monia Naghi

Introducing a strong form of soft continuity between soft topological spaces is significant because it can contribute to our growing understanding of soft topological spaces and their features, provide a basis for creating new mathematical tools and methods, and have significant applications in various fields. In this paper, we define soft super-continuity as a new form of soft mapping. We present various characterizations of this soft concept. Читать дальше...

Wetland vegetation composition and ecology of Lake Abaya in southern Ethiopia

Plos.org

by Dikaso Unbushe Gojamme

Wetland vegetation and ecology of Lake Abaya in the southern Ethiopia was studied to determine floristic composition, plant community type and vegetation ecology. A total of 102 plots were laid along transects that were set up preferentially across areas where there were rapid changes in vegetation or marked environmental gradients to collect data on estimate of percentage aerial cover of plant species and environmental variables. Vegetation data was analyzed by... Читать дальше...

Absolute monocyte counts could predict disease activity and secondary loss of response of patients with Crohn’s disease treated with anti-TNF-α drug

Plos.org

by Jia Hu, Yin Huang, Ruonan Jia, Xuehong Wang, Yongjun Wang

Background

Assessing Crohn’s disease (CD) activity is critical for monitoring disease progression. In CD, monocytes could release TNF-α. Thus, it is extremely important to study its role in the disease activity and loss of response to anti-TNF-α biologics.

Methods

In this study, we collected CD patients treated with biologics from January 2017 to May 2022. Indicators associated with disease activity were evaluated by Spearman... Читать дальше...

Single point motion kinematics convey emotional signals in children and adults

Plos.org

by Elisa Roberti, Chiara Turati, Rossana Actis-Grosso

This study investigates whether humans recognize different emotions conveyed only by the kinematics of a single moving geometrical shape and how this competence unfolds during development, from childhood to adulthood. To this aim, animations in which a shape moved according to happy, fearful, or neutral cartoons were shown, in a forced-choice paradigm, to 7- and 10-year-old children and adults. Accuracy and response times were recorded... Читать дальше...
