Empirical analysis of spatial heterogeneity in the development of China’s National Fitness Plan

Plos.org

by Yuanbo Hu

Purpose

The National Fitness Plan (NFP) is a vital initiative aimed at realizing Healthy China 2030. This study assessed spatial heterogeneity in the NFP development and the socioeconomic factors contributing to this inequality.

Methods

Data from 31 administrative regions in 2021 were analyzed using four NFP development metrics. Spatial autocorrelation was evaluated using global Moran’s I, followed by global and local regression models for non-random spatial patterns. Читать дальше...

Milk levels of transforming growth factor beta 1 identify mothers with low milk supply

Plos.org

by Rhea Sullivan, Alexandra Confair, Steven D. Hicks

Human milk is optimal for infant nutrition. However, many mothers cease breastfeeding because of low milk supply (LMS). It is difficult to identify mothers at risk for LMS because its biologic underpinnings are not fully understood. Previously, we demonstrated that milk micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) may be related to LMS. Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) also plays an important role in mammary involution and may contribute to LMS. Читать дальше...

‘Magic cosmetic fillers’: Appearance-enhancement effects on self–face recognition

Plos.org

by Valentina Cazzato, Charlotte Ellis, Stergios Makris

People naturally exhibit a self-serving bias which can be observed in their tendency to judge their own physical attractiveness more favourably than that of others. Despite this positive self-perception, minimally invasive cosmetic injectable procedures for facial rejuvenation and enhancement are becoming increasingly common. It remains unclear, however, whether recognizing an altered version of one’s own face, enhanced cosmetically,... Читать дальше...

Single-step generation of homozygous knockout/knock-in individuals in an extremotolerant parthenogenetic tardigrade using DIPA-CRISPR

Plos.org

by Koyuki Kondo, Akihiro Tanaka, Takekazu Kunieda

Tardigrades are small aquatic invertebrates known for their remarkable tolerance to diverse extreme stresses. To elucidate the in vivo mechanisms underlying this extraordinary resilience, methods for genetically manipulating tardigrades have long been desired. Despite our prior success in somatic cell gene editing by microinjecting Cas9 ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) into the body cavity of tardigrades, the generation of gene-edited individuals remained elusive. The attentive reconstruction of objects facilitates robust object recognition

Plos.org

by Seoyoung Ahn, Hossein Adeli, Gregory J. Zelinsky

Humans are extremely robust in our ability to perceive and recognize objects—we see faces in tea stains and can recognize friends on dark streets. Yet, neurocomputational models of primate object recognition have focused on the initial feed-forward pass of processing through the ventral stream and less on the top-down feedback that likely underlies robust object perception and recognition. Aligned with the generative approach, we propose... Читать дальше...
