Public Health Crisis in Gaza—Reply

Jamanetwork.com

In Reply We thank JAMA for allowing us to reply to the letters submitted in response to our Viewpoint. The letters’ authors accuse us of bias and of using faulty data to promote “political activism in support of barbarism and antisemitism.” Closer reading of our Viewpoint and these letters only underscores our call for evidence-based dialogue regarding the public health catastrophe in Gaza.

Public Health Crisis in Gaza

Jamanetwork.com

To the Editor The Viewpoint by Drs Ijaz and Habib seeks to shine a light on the responsibility of US-based academic medical journals in the setting of the public health crisis in Gaza. We do not agree with the facts related to the causes and consequences of the crises, nor do we agree with the conclusions and recommendations as stated in the Viewpoint. The authors place responsibility and blame for the health crises solely on Israel. Hamas’ role in the events of October 7, 2023, and Hamas’ role in... Читать дальше...

Sonnet at the Supermarket

Jamanetwork.com

His eyes wash over families of fruit, crushed cardboard, sticky hands. The trick is to be molecular: a watermelon sick with jaundice is no good, mushy inside. Carries disease internal to itself. Like how cells hold instructions for their own death or how birds always know the way home. His eyes washed with chemical droplets and still unseeing. Like light flushed down the sink. Shade of white so brutal it could kill you. Choose the roundest, brightest fruit, says Appa. Glaucoma, from glausso, from glow... Читать дальше...

Be Your Own Philosopher

Jamanetwork.com

Contrary to prevailing impression, medicine’s concern with ethical problems is not a by-product of recent advances in medical knowledge and skills. True, problems such as allotment of a limited organ supply among the many in need of a transplant or deciding to terminate an artificially sustained life did not exist in the past, but abortion, euthanasia, and other issues have always presented dilemmas. Some of these, such as the decision to save the life of a mother or the newborn, were even more frequent than they are now... Читать дальше...
