Game of Thrones: Why did Jon Snow not become the leader of the Dothraki?

GAME OF THRONES season 8 has finally come to end on HBO with the fate of the characters revealed. However, many questions about the series have remained in its wake. One particular point of contention for fans was the Dothraki, and in particular why Jon did not become their leader.
