British Soap Awards 2019: Hollyoaks wins best soap as Coronation Street scoops most gongs despite crisis on the cobbles
HOLLYOAKS was crowned Best Soap at the British Soap Awards 2019 in Manchester this evening.
The Channel 4 soap saw off competition from last year’s winners Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders and Emmerdale.
The soap’s cast were presented the award by actress Jane Seymour.
The Best Single Episode award went to Coronation Street for Aidan’s suicide and the aftermath. Nick Knowles presented the award to Shayne Ward.
Best Female Dramatic Performance went to EastEnders’ Gillian Wright, who plays Jean Slater.
She saw off competition from Katie McGlynn (Coronation Street), Elisabeth Dermot-Walsh (Doctors), Lucy Pargeter (Emmerdale) and Nadine Mulkerrin (Hollyoaks).
Alexandra Mardell, who plays hairdresser Emma Brooker in Coronation Street, won the Best Newcomer Award. Last year’s winner was Lorraine Stanley from EastEnders.
Mardell saw off competition from Bethan Moore (Doctors), Ricky Champ (EastEnders), James Moore (Emmerdale) and Talia Grant (Hollyoaks).
Adam Woodward, who plays Brody Hudson in Emmerdale, won the Best Male Dramatic Performance Award.
EastEnders’ Kara-Leah Fernandes took home the gong for the Best Young Performance. She plays Bailey Baker in the hit soap.
Scene of the Year went to Helen Worth for Gail’s monologue in Coronation Street.
Best Comedy Performance went to Sarah Moyle, who plays Valerie Pitman in Doctors.
Nathan Sussex, who plays Buster Smith in Hollyoaks, was named Villain of The Year.
The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street.
Best On-screen Partnership went to Roger Griffiths and Kara-Leah Fernandes, who play Mitch and Bailey Barker in EastEnders.

The Tony Warren Award (off-screen) was won by Emmerdale’s Val Lawson. She’s one of the soap’s Assistant Directors.
The Best Actress gong went to Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas Dingle in Emmerdale.
The impact of Aidan’s suicide in Coronation Street was voted the Best Storyline.
Hollyoaks’ Gregory Finnegan – he plays James Nightingale – was named Best Actor.
The bash saw Coronation Street win 5 awards; Hollyoaks 4; EastEnders 3; Emmerdale 2, and Doctors 1.
