A prominent commander of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL) was assassinated in the occupied area of Afrin in northern Aleppo on June 2.

The pro-opposition Enab Baladi news outlet said that Fawaz Yusuf al-Sheikh was killed with an improvised-explosive device (IED) that had been planted under his car. The incident took place in the district of Jindires.

Al-Sheikh was reportedly the commander of Jaysh al-Nasir anti-aircraft battalion. The group is one of the key members of the NFL coalition, which was formed last year.

Pro-opposition sources said that the assassination was likely carried out by ISIS cells, Kurdish forces or even the Syrian intelligence.

The NFL, including Jaysh al-Nasir, supported the recent attacks on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama. The coalition’s anti-aircraft and anti-tank battalions provided fire support for Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several al-Qaeda-affiliated groups.
