Ram/Salisbury Complete Doubles Quarter-final Field

0

There was plenty of drama on Sunday at Roland Garros, with three doubles teams rallying from a set down to advance to the quarter-finals.

No. 11 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are one of three remaining seeded duos in Paris, securing a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Henri Kontinen and John Peers. The American-British tandem moved one step closer to lifting the Coupe Jacques Brugnon, prevailing after two hours and six minutes. They saved six of seven break points.

Ram and Salisbury improved to 2-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head against Kontinen and Peers. They previously triumphed in a Match Tie-break at the Miami Open presented by Itau, earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Serbians Dusan Lajovic and Janko Tipsarevic supplied the fireworks on Sunday, storming back to defeat Rohan Bopanna and Marius Copil 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(8). They rallied from a break down in the third set and saved two match points at 5/6 and 7/8 in the deciding tie-break.

Lajovic, 28, and Tipsarevic, 34, are teaming up for the first time in their careers. The elder Serbian is 11 years removed from a quarter-final run at Roland Garros, when he advanced to the last eight with Viktor Troicki.

Next up for the unseeded duo is the red-hot German team of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies. Despite seeing their 10-set win streak (at all levels) come to a halt, Krawietz and Mies booked their spot in the quarters with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 comeback victory over fourth seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic.

Into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, Krawietz and Mies are extending their impressive run of form, just two weeks after blitzing the field at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Heilbronn. And in February, they won another title without dropping a set - their first on the ATP Tour - at the New York Open.

In other action, third seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah advanced past Robin Haase and Frederik Nielsen 6-3, 6-4. Semi-finalists in 2017, the Colombians are coming off a title at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome. And Argentine duo Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman also booked their spot in the quarters with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Gregoire Barrere and Quentin Halys.
