Jean Hanlon – as documentary explores her murder, what happened in Crete?

A BRIT, who was murdered in Crete in 2009, is having her story told in an upcoming documentary.

We explain who she is, what happened and when the documentary about her death will come out.

Who was Jean Hanlon and what happened?

Jean Hanlon was 53 and from Dumfries and had been living in Crete since 2003.

Michael Porter, her son, and the rest of her family have worked tirelessly to find out how his mum died.

Jean disappeared on Monday, March 9, 2009 and her body was pulled from Herkalion Harbour on Friday, March 13, 2009.

Her last text she sent was on March 9 and was to a friend and said: “help”.

Hours before she disappeared she had arranged to meet to male friends in a bar.

After pressure from the family, the Greeks opened a murder inquiry and the two men were quizzed, but then released.

Has the case been solved?

No one has been brought to justice for Jean’s death.

Police originally wrote it off as an accidental drowning.

The family insisted on a post-mortem, which revealed she suffered a series of injuries including facial wounds, shattered ribs and a punctured lung.

More tests later revealed her beck had been broken before she hit the water.

Michael appeared on Greek TV and written to the Greek prime minister looking for answers.

When will the documentary air?

Murdered in Paradise: The Killing of Jean Hanlon will premiere on June 10.

It is 60 minutes long and it will air on Channel 5 at 10pm.
