Mexican telenovela star Edith Gonzalez has died at the age of 54, according to reports.

The actress’s death early Thursday was confirmed in a statement by her family released to the TV station Televisa, where she worked. According to the family, there was a sudden deterioration in her health caused by a recurrence of ovarian cancer.

Gonzalez was first diagnosed in the summer of 2016, but went into remission the following year.

She is survived by her husband, Lorenzo Lazo, and their 14-year-old daughter, Constanza.

Gonzalez appeared in 26 films and more than 30 telenovelas throughout her career, collecting a number of accolades along the way, including a TVyNovelas award for best actress in 1986.

She achieved international recognition for her role in the 1993 series “Corazón salvaje” (“Wild Heart”) about a love triangle between two sisters and the illegitimate son of a wealthy sugar cane plantation owner. The series, which broke viewership records upon its release, stands as one of the most popular telenovelas of all time.

Her other memorable roles include “Bianca Vidal,” “Palabra de mujer,” “Mujer de madera,” “Eva la trailera” and “Las Bravo.”
