Jill Soloway Will Write, Direct ‘Red Sonja’ for Millennium After Bryan Singer Exit

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway is taking the reins of the troubled “Red Sonja” feature film, coming on to write and direct the comic-book adaptation.

Development of the project was put on hold in February as after accusations of sexual misconduct against director Bryan Singer resurfaced. At the time, Millennium Films dropped plans to shoot “Red Sonja” in Bulgaria later this year.

Singer, who was fired from the set of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” was initially tapped to direct “Red Sonja” for Millennium in September 2018. Following an expose in The Atlantic in January, which detailed four accounts from men accusing Singer of sexual misconduct, Singer’s attachment became precarious.

A Red Sonja film has been in the works at Millennium for more than a decade. Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery comic-book heroine from “Conan the Barbarian.” She was created in 1973 created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Smith for Marvel Comics.

The most recent iteration of the project had Rose McGowan attached to star in the titular role, with then-boyfriend Robert Rodriguez set to direct. But that version ultimately fell through.

Brigitte Nielsen starred in the role in a 1985 version of the film, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Red Sonja” will be Soloway’s first project since wrapping up their Amazon series “Transparent” with a two-hour musical series finale, in which it’s revealed that Jeffrey Tambor’s character, Maura, is dead.

Deadline was first to report.
