France vs. Brazil Round of 16: Preview + TV/streaming info
Brazil gave it everything, but Amandine Henry’s extra time goal sees the hosts through
France vs. Brazil has a certain ring to it, but make no mistake: the hosts should be seen as huge, huge favorites. The French won all of their Group A games, and though they didn’t produce their best form in their last two games, it feels more like a shift of focus rather than an indicator of any permanent drop in quality. Brazil, meanwhile, were arguably lucky to get their second win against Italy, and though they do have some outstanding veterans, they haven’t really convinced against anyone as a team.
However, with this possibly Marta’s last hurrah on the international stage, we’ll probably see them give it everything, and if France shows up expecting to coast, we just may see a chance of an upset.
Update 5:52pm: Brazil took France to extra time, and had a couple chances to win it, but ultimately the French are into the quarterfinals on the back of a 2-1 extra time win. Valerie Gauvin put France ahead in the 52nd minute after an even first half, but Thaisa’s equalizer — first called offside, then overruled by VAR and given as a goal — 11 minutes later rattled the hosts.
Eventually, though, Brazil’s lack of depth in the midfield showed through. Griedge Mbock Bathy saved a sure goal in the first half of extra time, blocking Debinha’s shot into an otherwise empty net after the North Carolina Courage midfielder had torched Marion Torrent, and from there France did all the attacking. Brazil looked like they might drag the game into penalties, but Amandine Henry finished off a 107th minute set piece to get the winner.
France will face the winner of tomorrow’s Round of 16 game between the United States and Spain. That game will take place this coming Friday, June 28, with the forecast projecting 100 degree temperatures in Paris.
