Royal Ascot 2019 in pictures: The highs and lows of a glorious week
From 20-1 Group 1 winners to Frankie four-timers, Royal Ascot 2019 has had it all.
Here are some of the best bits.
Tuesday
Lord Glitters (14-1) opened the show in style on Tuesday with a surprise victory in the Queen Anne.
It was the first of three winners at the meeting for Danny Tudhope and gave David O’Meara his first Royal Ascot Group 1.
Blue Point (5-2) was sensational in landing his second King’s Stand, while Circus Maximus (10-1) surprised many shrewdies with victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
The mud flew as The Grand Visir (12-1) sluiced home in the Ascot Stakes, Addeybb (5-1) bounced back to life in the Wolferton and Aidan O’Brien landed a touch with Arizona (15-8f).
Wednesday
Sir Michael Stoute had a day to remember as Crystal Ocean (3-1) landed the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes in horrific conditions.
The star five-year-old was perfectly suited by the drop back in trip and proved he’s one of the best horses in the world.
Afaak (20-1) went one place better in the Royal Hunt Cup, while Danny Tudhope’s day got even better as Move Swiftly (9-1) landed the Duke Of Cambridge.
Mark Johnston was on the board with Raffle Prize (18-1) in the Queen Mary and Andrew Balding saddled Dashing Willoughby to Queen’s Vase success.
Southern Hills (7-1) ended the day in style for Aidan O’Brien.
Thursday
Frankie Dettori was the star of the show on Day 3 as he completed a four-timer, with Stradivarius (Evsf) the pick of the bunch in the Gold Cup.
The Italian maestro also guided Sangarius (13-2), A’Ali (5-1) and Star Catcher (4-1) to victory on a day to remember.
His five-timer was just foiled by Biometric (28-1) in the Britannia as Aidan O’Brien saddle the 1-2-3 in the King George V Stakes at the end of the card, with South Pacific (22-1) coming home in front.
Friday
The Aidan O’Brien treble of Japan (6-4f), Hermosa (Evsf) and Ten Sovereigns (Evsf) was punted by many, but only the longest-priced of the three could do the business.
Frankie was on the board again as Advertise (8-1) struck in the Commonwealth Cup and 20-1 French raider Watch Me landed the Coronation Stakes in style.
Baghdad (7-2f) won the Duke Of Edinburgh for the second time on the trot, while Charlie Fellowes and Hayley Turner made history with Thanks Be (33-1) in the Sandringham.
Daahyeh (4-1f) looks a filly to follow after an emphatic win in the Albany.
Saturday
Blue Point (13-8f) made history in Diamond Jubilee by becoming the first horse since Choisir in 2003 to do the King’s Stand/Diamond Jubilee double.
Danny Tudhope was just denied yet another winner on board Dream Of Dreams (14-1) as the pair fought out a thriller.
Defoe (11-4f) hit the back of the net in the Hardwicke, following up his brilliant Coronation Cup success, while Space Traveller (25-1) caused a shock in the Jersey.
Pinatubo (3-1) was very impressive in the Chesham earlier in the card, as was Cape Byron (7-2f) in the Wokingham.
Silvestre De Sousa finished the meeting in style, landing a poignant success aboard Cleonte (7-2) in the Queen Alexandra.
