How common insect’s poo could destroy your car’s paintwork and cost you £500 in repairs this summer
COMMON insects expected to swarm parts of the UK this summer could destroy your car’s paintwork with its poo.
And you could have to fork out up to £500 to get it repaired.
Experts are predicting hordes of greenflies to spread across the country this summer due to rising temperatures.
And the small sap-eating bugs could cause significant damage to your paintwork if you’ve parked under a tree.
According to insect specialists, the poo contains a substance known as honeydew which clings to the surface of cars.
The excrement can then spread over the vehicle and form mould which can quickly eat through paint.
Depending on how long you ignore the damage, a complete respray can cost up to £500.
But if removed quickly before the poo can turn into mould, you can avoid sustaining significant damage to your vehicle.
A full-sized tree can host up to 2.5million types of the sap-eating insects.
Ranjen Gohri, director of 24/7 Home Rescue and Car Breakdown, said: “They may be small, but do not underestimate the damage the humble greenfly can cause to your car.
“These tiny aphids suck the sap from plants and trees, posing a real threat for farmers and gardeners, but they can also wreak havoc on motorists, too.

“The sticky substance they excrete from their backsides – bizarrely known as ‘honeydew’ – clings to roofs, bonnets and boots as a nasty residue.
“This goo then creates black, soot-like mould spores, which is acidic and can eat through paint.
“It’s incredibly hard to remove from paintwork, requiring good cleaning products and lots of elbow grease.
“A roof or bonnet respray could set you back around £500, or more, it’s vital you keep on top of cleaning regime in these early summer months.”
