‘Toy Story 4’ has huge opening weekend … but not as huge as expected: Are you just sick of sequels this summer? [POLL]

“Toy Story 4” dominated the box office in its opening weekend with $118 million, which makes it the biggest opening in the franchise, $8 million better than “Toy Story 3” back in 2010. Make no mistake, that’s a huge number, and most movies would be soaring successes if they made that much money in their entire runs. However, Disney had expected it to debut with $140 million, which makes this the latest sequel in 2019 whose box office has been softer than expected. Are moviegoers just sick of sequels? This latest adventure for Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and their secretly sentient friends got great reviews, and when you include overseas ticket sales it made $238 million worldwide. It also received an A rating on CinemaScore from opening night audiences, so it may continue to do good business in the weeks to come — as “disappointments” go, this is a good way to be disappointing. But it follows a couple of weekends of slumping sequels where “Men in Black International,” “Shaft,” “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and “Dark Phoenix” also under-performed. So did “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.”

It hasn’t all been bad news for sequels this season, though. A little film called “Avengers: Endgame” shattered box office records when it debuted in late April. And “John Wick: Chapter 3” has greatly outperformed its two predecessors. So it looks like movie audiences really do want more from their favorite franchises … except when they don’t.
