Speeding van driver who took out Oakley power pole in fatal wreck identified

OAKLEY — A man who died after his vehicle slammed into a power pole Saturday morning has been identified.

Sherman Tucker, 66, of Oakley, was driving more than 100 mph shortly before hitting the pole and knocking it over around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. The van flipped over, and Tucker died after becoming trapped inside, police said.

The wreck happened near the corner of West Cypress Road and O’Hara Avenue around 10:23 a.m.

An autopsy later Monday will determine if Tucker suffered a medical emergency before the van crashed. Police also were investigating to find out if something went wrong mechanically with the car.

The speeding van also hit another car, injuring a person. That person went by medical helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was expected to make a full recovery, police said.
