Fury-Peter set as Khan-Gojyat co-feature

The show takes place July 12th in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Following his May 25th stoppage of Chris Norrad, Hughie Fury said he wanted a breakout victory. He won’t be getting it in his next fight. Hennessy Sports confirmed today that Fury will be the co-feature for Amir Khan’s July 12th bout with Neeraj Gojyat in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, taking on 38-year-old former WBC champion Sam Peter.

Peter (38-7, 31 KO) had his most notable fight in 2005 when he thrice dropped Wladimir Klitschko in a losing effort, and probably peaked in his 2008 knockout of Oleg Maskaev for the WBC title. He would fall to Vitali Klitschko, Eddie Chambers, Wladimir again, Robert Helenius, and Kubrat Pulev among a string of low- to mid-tier wins before retiring in 2016.

He returned this past February with a knockout of 2-21 Gerardo Escobar, lost a split decision to Mario Heredia two months later, then knocked out 2-12-2 Alejandro Garduno. The first and third fights were at Cheers Bar and Grille in Tijuana.

A weird thing: according to BoxRec, the latter two bouts took place in a two-week span. Peter weighed in at 259 pounds for the first fight, then a career-high 286.5 in the second, implying he gained over 27 pounds in 14 days. It’s probably a typo, but what a feat if true.

This fight would have been interesting if Peter was at least 12 years younger, but as is, it’s another gimme for Fury (22-2, 12 KO). Congrats on somehow making the co-feature a bigger mismatch than the main event, I guess.
