BUILDING COLLAPSE: LASBCA CONFIRMS ARREST OF SITE SUPERVISOR
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has confirmed the arrest of the site supervisor in charge of the collapsed two-floor building at Adesanya Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi which occurred on Sunday.
The General Manager, Engr. Lekan Shodeinde stated that the Supervisor, Mr. Dada Olaniyi was arrested at the collapsed site by policemen from Makinde Police Station, Oshodi after being identified by some residents as the person supervising the collapsed building renovation.
He said that the developer of the building commenced renovation on the structure on Friday so as to rush the renovation through the weekend to avoid securing the necessary permit from LASBCA but unfortunately in the process of breaking slabs the building caved in and collapsed on the labourers.
While noting that two victims injured during the incident were taken to the hospital for treatment, Shodeinde said the Agency will intensify its efforts to sanitise the building construction industry by removing all the distressed and illegal structures prone to collapse as well as those that were not in conformity with the State building laws.
The General Manager reiterated the State Government’s commitment to put all necessary machinery in place to sanction any erring developer or owner who willingly breaks the government seal on structurally defective buildings and fails to hire the services of qualified professionals with the required knowledge and expertise to build, demolish and supervise building construction in order to prevent building collapse in the State.
