Failed Coup in Ethiopia, Army Chief Dead

Ethiopia’s army chief of staff Seare Mekonnen (pictured above, right) was shot dead by his bodyguard in Addis Ababa just hours after an attempted coup in Amhara state left the regional president and another top adviser dead, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office confirmed on Sunday, June 23. Via DW news

Amhara’s state president Ambachew Mekonnen and his advisor were also killed, according to state media, which named the region’s security head, General Asamnew Tsige, as the orchestrator of the attempted coup, VOA  reported via Reuters.

The US Embassy is fully aware of the coup attempt:

22 June multiple alerts: Event: The U.S. Embassy is aware of police and military activity in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar.  Expect road closures and checkpoints in and around both cities, which may delay or prevent movement in or out of either city by road.  Cellular data and internet are turned off.

Bole International Airport is fully operational.

All Chief of Mission personnel currently outside of Addis Ababa have been advised to return to Addis Ababa by airplane as soon as they can safely do so.  Those who cannot fly and those currently in Addis Ababa are sheltering in place
