27,000 Angkas riders undergo further training

0

APP-based motorcycle ride-hailing company Angkas said its “partner riders” are now undergoing further training to ensure they are qualified to take in passengers.

The Department of Transportation has allowed Angkas to conduct a six-month pilot run in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu starting this month. The agency had earlier assessed the company’s safety training program for its riders.

Angkas head of Regulatory and Public Affairs George Royeca in a statement said “there are 27,000 biker partners who are going through retraining before they are allowed to operate transport services under the pilot run in Metro Manila and Cebu.”

On Monday the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group said in a news conference held in Camp Crame in Quezon City that it is supporting Angkas during its pilot run. PNP-HPG director Brig. Gen. Roberto Fajardo said Angkas provides a “service that helps commuters in safely going to and from their destinations.”

Angkas, led by CEO Angeline Tham, on Monday in Camp Crame donated 50 motorcycle helmets to the PNP-HPG.

Royeca said that, unlike “habal habal” riders, Angkas riders are trained to conduct motorcycle taxi services. They are also required to have a professional driver’s license, and National Bureau of Investigation and barangay clearances.

They also undergo motorcycle and skills assessment and safety training, the official said.

He added all Angkas rides have “upfront pricing.” The rider and passenger are covered by an accident insurance policy worth up to P450,000 in case of death or dismemberment, and up to P100,000 for medical reimbursements, Royeca said.
