Liberal Democrat deputy leader Jo Swinson mocked after declaring she could be the next PM
JO Swinson declared she could be the next Prime Minister – as the Lib Dem leadership contender attacked Boris Johnson.
The fierce anti-Brexit Lib Dem deputy accused Boris of indulging in “absolute fantasies” about his own plans to get Britain out of the EU.
But Brexit Minister James Cleverly mocked her claim by tweeting: “If I were considerably younger, considerably fitter and considerably faster I could win a race against Mo Farah. Fact.”
Jo Swinson went on to say the Lib Dems could be in power the next time the public go to the polls.
Challenged on Sky News whether she would be willing to form a coalition in the next Election, Ms Swinson said her party could win outright.
“We could be better than kingmakers,” she said.
“I do not put any limit on our ambitions for the Liberal Democrats because our country needs a liberal alternative.”
Asked if she thought she could be PM she replied: “Yes.”
She quoted a YouGov poll from last week which suggested the Lib Dems could top the lot with 30 per cent of the vote if Labour’s Brexit position remainder unclear.

And she said more MPs were thinking of following ex-Labour, ex-Change UK MP Chuka Umunna and joining.
“I do have conversations, they’re private conversations.
“But I think in order for people to be able to talk frankly about what is a difficult step if somebody’s thinking about joining a new political party, then those need to be able to be kept private.”
