Wimbledon 2019: Brit No1 Kyle Edmund storms into second round with straight-sets win over Jaume Munar
KYLE EDMUND kicked off his bid for a first stab at the second week of Wimbledon with a convincing straight-sets victory.
The British No1, seeded 30th here, overcame a patchy start to defeat Spanish youngster Jaume Munar 6-4 6-4 6-4 and book a second-round date with Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday.
And a shock first-round defeat for seventh-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas means Edmund can reach the last-16 without having to beat a higher-ranked player.
Yorkshireman Edmund, 24, is yet to forge a strong bond with the British public like his predecessors Andy Murray and Tim Henman – and he was overlooked by prime-time BBC TV in favour of Venus Williams’ clash with teenager Cori Gauff.
It will probably take a run deep into Wimbledon fortnight for Edmund to receive wider recognition – even though he did reach a Grand Slam semi-final at last year’s Australian Open.
But the Centre Court crowd were urging Edmund on as he roared back from losing his first service game – only to take EIGHT set points before he could seal the first in nervy fashion.
Edmund began to overpower the Mallorcan world No90 as he got his long levers pumping in the second – breaking for 3-2, then saving three set points as Munar threatened an immediate break-back.
