EVANSVILLE’S CARLOS CASTRO AND TYLER BEARDSLEY TAKE HOME BOTH WEEKLY AWARDS
Two Evansville Otters players have earned Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 30th. Carlos Castro has won Player of the week and Tyler Beardsley earned Pitcher of the week. The awards are chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.
This is the second straight week that an Evansville player has won the Player of the Week award Castro follows fellow teammate Ryan Long. This week saw the Otters go 4-2 with two shutouts and swept the Schaumburg Boomers. Castro turned in a .435 batting average with two homeruns, four runs batted in and posted a 1.218 OPS. He hit safely in all six games, he also drove in a run in all four wins this week. Evansville improved to a 13-7 record when Castro drives in a run.
Castro, a native of La Romana, Dominican Republic, was selected to his first Frontier League All-Star team this week. He joined the Otters after spending six seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization reaching High-A. In his second year with the Otters, Castro finds himself tied for second place in the league in homeruns and sixth in batting average at .297.
Beardsley has given Evansville their second Pitcher of the Week honors. His teammate Randy Wynne also won the award earlier in the season. Beardsley won the award after blanking the Schaumburg Boomers in a 5-0 win. In the win Beardsley gave up five hits, and struck out eight in his complete game shut out. His night finished with a 0.89 WHIP and a .161 opponents batting average.
The 25-year-old righty out of California State University Sacramento, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 16th round of the 2016 draft. He played two seasons with the organization before joining the Otters in 2018. In his second season with the Otters, Beardsley ranks sixth amongst qualified pitchers with a 2.45 ERA and he ranks third in inning pitched with 58.2. Evansville has a 6-3 record this season when Beardsley appears for them.
