USA v. England, Women’s World Cup Semifinal: Game thread
The winner moves on to the final.
On Tuesday, the U.S. faces England in the Women’s World Cup semifinal. The game kicks off at 12:00 p.m. PT on FOX and is expected to be a close battle between two of the best-performing teams at the tournament.
England has only given up one goal this tournament, while the U.S. have allowed two — one to Spain on a poor defensive giveaway and another to France when they failed to mark on a set piece. That doesn’t mean this match will be a defensive battle. Both sides have plenty of attacking talent — with Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan notching the most goals for the U.S. and Ellen White leading the goal-scoring attack for England.
What to Watch
- England’s right side — Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris are a formidable duo. Megan Rapinoe and Crystal Dunn are as well. Who wins that battle?
- Ellen White — The striker is in her best form and is tied for the Golden Boot lead with 5 goals. She’s a poacher and can get in behind centerbacks.
- Alex Morgan — After starting off well in the World Cup, Morgan has struggled to get herself in good goal-scoring positions. This is a match where Morgan could sneak in behind, though, and the team will need her help stretching England’s defense.
- Subs — I can see this match being close leading into the second half. Can Christen Press, Carli Lloyd, or another American come off the bench and make an impact?
